  • Quintana signs with Cowgirls

The New Mexico Highlands women’s track and field program added another homegrown star to the fold on Wednesday, when West Las Vegas’ Jayme Quintana signed a letter of intent to continue her education and athletic career at NMHU.

“It’s very exciting,” said Quintana. “Coach (Bob) DeVries really pushed me, telling me how much potential I have. And my family has encouraged me a lot.”

  • Train Robbers in town

Las Vegas Train Robbers manager Casey Dill says he expects to field a team with potential to win a Pecos League championship — and possibly land a few players in major league ballclubs down the line.

Of course, it’s easy to be optimistic during spring training. But Dill — who managed the now-defunct Las Cruces Vaqueros to the Pecos League finals in 2012 — does know something about baseball talent.

  • Mora’s Chavez hunts a trifecta

Finding motivation to run hard hasn’t always been simple this season for Mora’s Alonzo Chavez.

Chavez has dominated the distance events, and in the absence of close rivals, he’s found himself alone in the front of the pack more often than not.

This weekend, however, there is a clear motivation — the possibility of a sweep in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 at the Class 1A-2A state track and field championships. UNM’s track complex plays host to the small-school state meet Friday and Saturday.

Adams State (178 points) and Western State Colorado (156.5) were the only teams ahead of NMHU in the women’s standings.

  • State brackets set

    BASEBALL

In their fight for respect in the state baseball ranks, the Robertson Cardinals took a leap forward this season under first-year head coach Ken Sandoval.

The Redbirds (19-7 overall) earned the highest state tournament seeding in recent history at No. 4 and will host a first-round Class 3A state tournament best-of-three series against Shiprock beginning Friday afternoon and continuing on Saturday.

Game times will be announced later this week.
