  • NMHU slugger honored in region

    New Mexico Highlands outfielder Clay Mohr has been named to the 2011 Rawlings American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Central Region Second Team.

    The honor was announced Wednesday.

    Mohr finished the season with a .387 batting average. Mohr connected for 12 doubles, five triples and three home runs over the course of the season.

    A number of Las Vegas-area athletes have been recognized with their selection to all-district, all-state and North-South All-Star teams for baseball and softball.

    CLASS 3A BASEBALL

    West Las Vegas seniors Nicholas Aragon and Corey Archibeque have been named to the Class 3A North baseball team.

    The North-South All-Star baseball game will be played June 10-11 in Socorro. Selection to the North-South teams is limited to top players from that year’s graduating high school class.

    A host of summer sports camps for various age groups and activities are scheduled in the coming weeks.

    The 2011 Don Woods Football Clinic will be held from Thursday, June 9, through Saturday, June 11, and will feature the camp’s namesake and 1975 NFL Rookie of the Year, an alumnus of New Mexico Highlands University.

    CHICAGO  — Right from the start, LeBron James made it clear he was going to attack and no one was going to stop him.

    Point taken.

    James came up big down the stretch with nine of his 29 points in the final 4:27, Dwyane Wade added 24 and the Miami Heat beat the Chicago Bulls 85-75 Wednesday night to tie the Eastern Conference finals at one game apiece.

    “It was a big game,” James said. “We felt like it was a must win for us going back home.”

    Amanda Ortzow’s love of the octagon helped her decide to continue her distance running career at the collegiate level.

    The West Las Vegas senior has committed to attending and running for New Mexico Highlands University in cross country and track and field in 2011-12, she reported to the Optic this week.

    “I didn’t want to stop running — or fighting — after high school was over,” she said. “I love it too much.”

  • Barela to head Lady Panthers...

    Leroy Barela, who just finished guiding the Pecos High School track and field team to a host of medals at the Class 2A state championship meet, will be picking up an additional whistle this coming school year.

    Barela has been hired to take over the school’s girls’ basketball program, the coach said Saturday.

    Barela served as a top assistant to basketball programs at Class 3A West Las Vegas for four years. Before that, he coached two years at Valley Middle School.
