  • State soccer pairings announced

    Pairings for the state high school soccer tournaments have been announced by the New Mexico Activities Association, and Robertson's boys and girls know who they're playing, when and where this weekend to open the postseason.

    Coach Clarence Montoya's Cardinals are the No. 8 seed in the Class 1A-3A boys' bracket and will host No. 9 Bloomfield at 3 p.m. Friday at RHS Field.

    The winner moves on to play No. 1 Sandia Prep at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, at the new Sue Cleveland High in Rio Rancho.

  • WEEKEND ROUNDUP: East, West...

    Jazmine Harge and Brooke Knezevich combined for nearly three dozen kills Thursday night, leading Robertson to a key District 2-3A volleyball win over host St. Michael's in Santa Fe.

    The Lady Cardinals (13-5, 6-2) swept the Lady Horsemen 25-20, 25-21, 25-14.

    RHS hosts Santa Fe Indian on Tuesday evening.

    West Las Vegas took an improved Raton volleyball team to a fifth set for the second time in as many meetings this season on Thursday, then fell victim to mighty Pojoaque in a Saturday sweep.

  • Mustangs toss Cowboys

    There were moments Saturday when it seemed New Mexico Highlands simply had to win the football game at Western New Mexico.

    One was when Narciso Diaz heaved the ball downfield into the grasp of Travis Lee, who darted beyond the reach of defenders for a 66-yard touchdown. That score (coupled with Greg Rivara's extra point) drew the Cowboys within 16-14 and may have rattled the collective nerves of the announced crowd of 543 at Ben Altamirano Stadium, on hand to witness WNMU's homecoming game.

  • Highlands boots ASC

    Ending an eight-game slide, the New Mexico Highlands women's soccer team rode a strong first half to defeat Adams State 2-0 on Friday at Perkins Stadium.

    The Cowgirls and Justin Wagar were to play Sunday, carrying a 3-11 RMAC record.

    Yolanda Elias struck first for Highlands on Friday, drawing a penalty in what turned out to be a physical, foul-plagued afternoon. She booted a penalty kick at the 12:20 mark off Grizzly goalkeeper Kirsten Dorsey.

  • Kazingo, Kirui are all-RMAC

    New Mexico Highlands' Nicaise Kazingo and Moses Kirui earned all-conference honors Saturday, setting the pace for a pair of seventh-place team finishes in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference cross country championships.

    Highlands' men were seventh of 11 schools; the NMHU women seventh of 13 in the meet, hosted by Metro State in Denver.

    Adams State added to its string of team championships in both races and is considered a leading contender for the national title on the men's and women's sides.

  • Cards, Elks both on rise in...

    Two of the most-improved prep football teams in the state meet up Friday night at Cardinal Stadium, each looking to establish itself as a legitimate contender out of District 2-3A.

    Robertson (4-3, 0-1) plays host to Pojoaque (6-2, 1-1); kickoff is 7 p.m.

    Under the guidance of coach Richard Martinez and staff, the Cardinals have built a winning record despite being a predominantly young group playing a rigorous schedule chock full of ranked teams.

  • Las Vegas native fights Friday

    Las Vegas native Michael Coca Gallegos is slated to fight his second professional boxing match Friday in Las Vegas, Nev.

    Gallegos, 31, will box as part of a card at the Orleans Hotel and Casino. His announced opponent is Lawrence Hughes.

    The card is headlined by a heavyweight battle between Oliver McCall and Lance Whitaker. Other bouts are cruiserweights Arthur Williams vs. Victor Barragan, junior welterweights Juan Heraldez vs. Ivan Diaz, and heavies Elijah McCall vs. Andre Carthron.

  • Twice as nice!

    Tuesday night’s cluster of lightning strikes in the Las Vegas area caused no known injuries, but the Robertson girls’ soccer team got a charge out of them anyway.

    Through the first 26 minutes and 12 seconds of Robertson’s home finale with Pojoaque, neither team could muster enough offensive chances to take control of the game. Then the first lightning bolts flashed along the western skyline, and officials declared a mandatory 30-minute delay.

  • Cardinals trounce Elks

    Beginning with a safety and punctuated by a forced (and recovered) fumble, Friday night's 40-7 Robertson football victory over Pojoaque belonged largely to the Cardinal defense.

    Consistently throughout the night, the host Redbirds harassed Elks quarterback Michael Garcia and they effectively shut down drive after drive from a Pojoaque team that has already eclipsed its previous best start to a football season.
