  • Making a splash

    Miranda Martinez and Vanessa Lucero led an effective outside-inside punch, scoring 17 points apiece Monday afternoon in a 69-51 win over Grants in the first round of the Ben Lujan Invitational on the campus of Pojoaque High School.

    West (7-0) was to play Española (8-2) in one of two semifinals Tuesday night. The Lady Sundevils bullied Class 2A Peñasco 48-36 on Monday. In the other semifinal, host Pojoaque, a 32-28 winner over Cimarron, was to match up with Socorro, a 67-44 victor over Taos.

  • Dons 2-0 at home after rocking...

    West Las Vegas boys’ basketball team has yet to win a game away from home this season. But the Dons have yet to lose in front of the home crowd at the Gillie Lopez Gym.

    WLV (2-5) held off a late surge by Ruidoso on Monday to prevail 63-58 on its home floor.

    Ryan Aragon scored seven of his 14 points in the opening quarter as the Dons took a 15-7 advantage. Aragon slashed to the hoop, drew a foul and completed a three-point play to make it 5-2. He then scored on a fast break, and took a pass from Anthony Madrid for another score the next time down.

  • Cards stay on a roll

    Robertson’s boys’ basketball team played the role of road warriors this past week, capping a three-city tour Saturday with a 70-55 victory at Ruidoso.

    Coach David Bustos’ bunch improved to 8-2 overall heading into a break before the Stu Clark Tournament.

    Fabian Varela led Robertson with 19 points. Justin Bustos scored 18. And the soccer star duo of R.J. McNellis and Clint Brayfield again shined, adding 16 and 10 points, respectively.

  • Cowgirls cruise

    On an afternoon where a number of Cowgirls beefed up their statistics at the expense of struggling NAIA school Northern New Mexico College, the most significant stat of all was six.

    As in six wins, NMHU’s total to date, in nine games played.

    Saturday’s 112-44 blowout of the fledgling Eagles gave Highlands a 6-3 record, the best in several years for a program that had fallen on hard times since it last won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference West division a decade ago.

  • Dons grapplers back in Duke City

    Attention, prospective tourists and other visitors to Albuquerque: Need tips on the best places to stay, restaurants to dine in, sites to see while you’re in town? The West Las Vegas wrestling team may be able to point you in the right direction.

    The Dons and coach Robert Alarcon should know the Duke City just about that well by now, after having competed in tournaments there the last three weekends.

    And, Alarcon says, they’ve done quite well indeed, treating the mats of Del Norte, Highland and now Rio Grande like their own.

  • Aye, Karlee! RHS tops Mora

    Karlee Bradley scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the opening quarter Wednesday evening, giving host Robertson (3-2) a running start against Mora.

    The Lady Cardinals went on to a 57-30 triumph in a meeting of Class 3A and Class 2A state qualifiers.

    Robertson got a major contribution from Bradley and Daniella Montoya, who did most of her damage in transition and finished with 14 points.

    Bradley, whose improved shooting touch was a major factor in Robertson’s postseason run this past March, posed a serious matchup problem for the Rangerettes.

  • No to game reductions

    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. --  Given the state of the economy in general and in particular the lean budget for state government, entities and agencies statewide, including school districts. are bracing for cuts.

    For now at least, it doesn’t appear that the schools are ready to apply those cuts to their varsity sports schedules.

    Representatives of New Mexico Activities Association member schools this week voted against proposed reductions in game schedules that would have applied to all NMAA schools.

  • Lady Dons rated as high as No. 1

    West Las Vegas High is enjoying a rare distinction among Meadow City sports programs -- a No. 1 statewide ranking.

    The Lady Dons girls’ basketball team is rated No. 1 in Class 3A according to the New Mexico GameDay poll conducted by Albuquerque TV station KOB. West is No. 2 in the state according to the New Mexico High School Coaches Association rankings.

  • Armijo scores 21 as Cowgirls win

    Jessica Armijo scored 12 of her game-high 21 points in the second half Monday night as New Mexico Highlands tripped up visiting Oklahoma Panhandle State 67-55.

    The Cowgirls’ 5-2 start is their best in four years, according to NMHU’s sports information office. The team hosts intrastate rival Eastern New Mexico on Thursday night at the Wilson Complex, continuing a three-night homestand and  a detour from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule.

  • Mora girls NRG champs

    Sophomore guard Andrea Romero scorched Mesa Vista’s defense for 20 points this past Saturday to lead Mora’s girls’ basketball team past the Trojans in the championship game of the Northern Rio Grande Invitational.

    It’s the second straight NRG girls’ basketball title for the Rangerettes, who won in 2008 under then-head coach Mark Cassidy.
