  • Cowgirls lasso Zias for key...

    Ashley Logan made 10 of 11 free throws en route to a career-high 24 points Monday night, leading New Mexico Highlands to an 89-85 win over Eastern New Mexico at Greyhound Arena in Portales.

    The non-conference women’s basketball game was the season debut for both teams. Counting a recent preseason upset of NCAA Division I Northern Arizona and a rout of Northern New Mexico College as well as Monday’s game, NMHU and coach Tiffany Darling are off to a strong start and looking for a turnaround of their own this year.

  • Mora runners, coach start strong

    Coach Mark Cassidy has had a stunning season coaching the Mora boys’ cross country program.

    With several of his boys placing among the top ten throughout the season, Cassidy’s debut guiding the distance runners has been a success.  

    Henrique Chávez was the only returning runner top ten state contender for Class A-AA from the 2008 team.

    Cassidy had never coached cross country but said he was excited to take it on this year. With a very young and inexperienced team he has brought home individual medals and team trophies.

  • Cowgirls pluck Eagles

    In its final tuneup before opening the regular season the NMHU Cowgirl basketball team bullied NAIA opponent Northern New Mexico College 123-51 on Saturday in Española.

    “Our girls are making huge strides towards our goal this season,” said NMHU coach Tiffany Darling in a news release. “They are playing harder and harder with each passing day. I am so proud of what they have accomplished in one year. We are ready to start the regular season and start turning some heads.”

  • Robertson 41, Cobre 0

    “Benito would have been proud of you guys.”

    That’s how a public address announcer at Cardinal Stadium congratulated the Robertson football team — 41-0 winners over Cobre — as it left the field Saturday afternoon.

    Playing in honor of the late Benito Lemos — a member of Robertson’s first-ever state championship team — the Cardinals scored 34 points in the second half to transform a defensive nailbiter into a rout.

  • NMHU big man fourth in Wyoming

    New Mexico Highlands heavyweight Jesse Boggs — a national qualifier in 2008-09 — started his senior campaign right. Boggs finished fourth in the elite division of Saturday’s University of Wyoming Open in Laramie, Wyo.

    Boggs went 3-2 to lead the NMHU wrestling team’s effort in its season debut.

  • Lady Card spikers denied

    The postseason is over for Robertson and Mora volleyball teams, who lost Friday in the state volleyball tournaments at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.

    Robertson (16-7) fell to a familiar nemesis — District 2-3A foe Pojoaque Valley, who  went on to win the Class 3A state title Saturday.

    The Elkettes, ranked No. 1  through much of the season, eliminated RHS 25-16, 25-17 and 26-24 in one of two Class 3A semifinals Friday night.

  • Las Vegas YAFL teams at state...

    At least in Las Vegas Young American Football League, the 49ers and Raiders are championship-caliber teams.

    The Niners — 6-0 and champs of the city’s junior division — and the Raiders, who won the senior division title by going 4-2, will play in the state YAFL tourney on Saturday and Sunday at Bullhead Park in Albuquerque.

  • Cards, Indians meet

    Robertson football coach Richard Martinez says he’s encouraged by what he’s seeing from his team at this point in the season but still wants it to improve week by week.

    The Cardinals open the Class 3A state playoffs as the No. 6 seed, hosting 11th seeded Cobre on Saturday; kickoff is 1:30 p.m. at Cardinal Stadium.

  • Local grapplers compete in trials

    Bring on the world.

    That’s essentially what Las Vegans Marcos Martinez and Jesse Valdez said in their first real foray into higher level martial arts competition. Each of the two went 2-2 in the recent World Team Trials for Grappling in Phoenix.

    Martinez and Valdez have been training in jiu jitsu, adding to their growing martial arts repertoire based on years of collegiate wrestling.
