  • Treating the home crowd

Amanda Ortzow, Jayme Quintana and Alonzo Chavez all have built reputations for athletic prowess grown right here in northern New Mexico.

Their fan bases in Las Vegas and Mora have seen them produce moments of triumph in training and competition.
On Saturday, they added to the memories by helping New Mexico Highlands cross country sweep the women’s and men’s team championships of the annual NMHU XC Jam.

  • Tough to bear - Dons lose to...

The least they could’ve done was leave a few sacks of their world-famous chile.

Hatch Valley’s Jared Garay threw three touchdown passes and Adrian Grajeda accounted for three scores — two rushing, one receiving — as the Bears (4-1) downed West Las Vegas 42-7 on Friday night at the Herrera Complex.

West’s struggles to establish an effective running game continued in this contest, and the Dons didn’t gain a first down until Jose Juan Montaño’s 11-yard pass to Miguel Sena early in the second quarter.

  • Home sweet home

Memorial Middle School distance runners Josh Valdez and Makayla Quintana — both eighth graders — have had to get used to running up front, often with nobody to chase down, this season.

Valdez has won all but one cross country race. Quintana has five first-place finishes and a pair of runner-up finishes. The meet victories include Saturday morning’s Meadow City Invitational held at Gene Torres Golf Course.

PITTSBURGH  — Derek Jeter will walk off the baseball field for the final time as a player this weekend, taking his mystique, his iconic No. 2 jersey and a fistful of World Series rings along with him.

For the better part of two decades the New York Yankees great graciously accepted the role as the face of Major League Baseball. Scandal came and went. Dynasties rose and fell.

  • Runners here on Saturday

A rare opportunity to witness Las Vegas’ distance runners in action (without having to make a long-distance trip) presents itself Saturday.

The combined Meadow City Invitational and NMHU XC Jam takes center stage beginning at 8 a.m. at the Gene Torres Golf Course.

Middle schoolers kick off the day’s events with races at 8 o’clock. It will be the season finale for Memorial Middle School; West Las Vegas Middle School has one meet remaining after Saturday.

Junior varsity girls and boys follow at 8:30 and 9, respectively.

  • Lady Dons sweep; Mora edges RHS

West Las Vegas’ volleyball team muscled its way past visiting Socorro in a quick sweep Tuesday night at Gillie Lopez Gym.

Across town, it was a different story — a five-set drama that featured two area favorites for the price of one. Mora held on to win against Robertson at Mike Marr Gym.

West (4-2) wasted little time jumping on the Lady Warriors.

After a 25-15 win, the Lady Dons took a close game two 25-21 and then cruised 25-8.

  • Dragon the line - Monte del Sol...

Robertson’s win streak in boys’ soccer ended at one Wednesday afternoon, with Monte del Sol taking a 5-1 win at RHS Field.

The visitors kept Robertson’s defense on its heels most of the match, putting heavy pressure on keeper Lorenzo Marquez, who put up a valiant effort in defeat.

  • Youth Soccer - Sept. 26
