  • LV sluggers in state playoffs

Their reward for a winning spring that included a District 2-3A title is a home game in the first round of the state softball tournament.

Robertson’s Lady Cardinals will be the No. 5 seed and will host No. 12 Ruidoso, tentatively at 11 a.m. Saturday.

West Las Vegas, which made it all the way to the 3A final last year, will make a return trip to state, albeit with a tougher path. The Lady Dons are the No. 13 seed and travel to No. 4 Hope Christian in Albuquerque. Game time had not been set as of press time.

  • State tennis in spotlight

Juliana Guerin is eyeing her third state singles tennis title. David Romero III is hunting his first after taking one in doubles last May.

Those storylines and others will play out this week in Albuquerque, site of the Class 1A-3A state tennis championships. First-round action gets things started on Wednesday afternoon at the Jerry Cline Complex.

The Meadow City figures to be well-represented when the New Mexico state tennis championships begin this Wednesday in Albuquerque.

Robertson swept to twin team district championships on the boys’ and girls’ sides over the weekend in Taos, also taking home individual championships in boys’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ singles and girls’ doubles. RHS will send a total of seven girls and six boys to state. West Las Vegas adds one girl to the mix as well.

  • Lady Cards soar to district...

Robertson softball added an exclamation point to its regular-season District 2-3A championship by handling Taos on the road Saturday.

Final scores: 15-5 and 20-2 RHS.

The Lady Cardinals (16-8 overall, 9-2 district) and head coach Adrian Jaramillo awaited the state tournament seeding, to be announced Sunday afternoon by the New Mexico Activities Association.

The Lady Cards and their Robertson baseball brothers — who fell 5-2 and 11-3 at Taos on Saturday — were projected as likely hosts for first round games.

  • Cowboys dash past ‘Runners

Winning three of four over the weekend against Metro State in the regular-season finale pushed New Mexico Highlands’ baseball team over the coveted 30-win threshold.

It’s become a common milestone for Steve Jones-led teams.

Bigger prizes await for this one, which finished the regular season 31-18 overall, 28-11 in league play and 16-7 at Brandt Park.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament begins this week in Grand Junction, Colo.
