    NHL talks could resume Tuesday

Labor negotiations between the NHL and the locked-out players’ association may resume Tuesday after a four-day break.
The location and the agenda have yet to be determined. The sides held two days of talks this week in New York without discussion of hockey-related revenue — the core economic issue that has prevented the NHL regular season from starting on time.

  • Weekend Roundup - Cowgirl skid...

A return to the Wilson Complex wasn’t enough to get the Highlands volleyball team off their current slide over the weekend. The Cowgirls lost to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference foes Black Hills State (S.D.) and Chadron State (Neb.) on Friday and Saturday.
NMHU is 6-15 overall and 2-9 in the conference.

  • Bigger tests loom for Cowboys

Winners of three straight and 5-1 overall, the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys have some major tests ahead.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s preseason favorite, Colorado State-Pueblo hosts NMHU on Nov. 3. The always tough Chadron State Eagles visit Perkins Stadium a week from Saturday.

But first, there’s Adams State this weekend, and how Highlands fares against the Grizzlies is often a good barometer for the team’s overall fortunes.

  • RHS kickers two-step past...

Once was enough for the Robertson boys’ soccer team (7-8) in a key district match with Pojoaque Valley on Wednesday evening.

Devon Maes’ goal off a header gave the host Cardinals all they’d need to put away the Elks in a 1-0 shutout that completed a doubleheader sweep.

In the earlier match, the No. 4 ranked Robertson girls outgunned the Elkettes 6-0.

Maes, an energetic player along the wings this season for coach Clarence Montoya’s Cardinals, broke through early on.

  • West spikers come on late, sweep...

At home in the friendly surroundings of Mike Marr Gym, the Robertson Lady Cardinals played well enough to upset visiting West Las Vegas on Tuesday evening.

But the Lady Dons had other plans, and while they may have kept them secret early in each of the three sets, those plans didn’t allow for any upsets.

West, 9-4 overall and the No. 5 ranked team in Class 3A volleyball, won 25-23, 25-10, 29-27 to stay on track for a District 2-3A title.

  • WLV runners take on Duke City

When the original plans to run in Capital’s Jaguar Invite this coming Saturday fell through, the West Las Vegas cross country teams replaced that meet with one in Albuquerque.

Considering the squads’ successes in the Duke City to date, that might not be a bad Plan B.

This past Saturday, West’s boys placed third and the WLV girls were fourth in Volcano Vista’s meet on Albuquerque’s west side.
