  • Walking the line - Cowgirl...

Conscientious coaches routinely keep track of the student-athletes in their charge, telling them to get to class and admonishing them against slacking on homework.

For three New Mexico Highlands University women’s basketball coaches, however, the past few years have meant also setting the example by getting to class themselves.

The Las Vegas Train Robbers were looking to clinch a series victory over the visiting Alpine (Texas) Cowboys with a Tuesday doubleheader at Rodriguez Park.

Las Vegas, which won 10-5 Saturday on a well-attended “Longmire Night,” tripled up on Sunday with a 9-3 matinee win, but Alpine ended its offensive slump with a 14-8 verdict Monday night.

  • Going ‘Long’ - Robust crowd,...

A near-capacity crowd at Saturday night’s Las Vegas Train Robbers game was treated to the sight of “Longmire” actor Lou Diamond Phillips hitting a single off series star Robert Taylor at Rodriguez Park.

That turned out to be just a preview — or “trailer,” in cinematic jargon — of the hitting to come.

Several hundred fans in attendance watched as the home team clubbed out four home runs in a stirring 10-5 win over the Alpine (Texas) Cowboys.
