  • Tough luck Tuesday

    Kayla Romero sliced 17 kills past the West Las Vegas defense Tuesday night, leading Class 4A Española Valley over the Lady Dons (3-1) at Gillie Lopez Gym.

    The visiting Lady Sundevils won in four games, only falling in the second set of the night.

    Game scores were 25-16, 20-25, 25-19 and 25-17 in favor of Española.

    Errors by the Lady Dons led to an 0-4 start in game one, and they got no closer than three points the rest of the set.

  • Champion Lions to test Redbirds

    Last weekend’s gridiron results have made Friday night’s Robertson-Santa Rosa football clash even more interesting.

    Robertson (1-1) found its groove with a 27-19 upset of perennial Class 3A power Lovington last Friday at Cardinal Stadium.

    Then on Saturday, Santa Rosa (2-0) doubled up Albuquerque Academy 54-27 in a major road victory for the Class 2A state champion Lions. Academy had edged Trinidad (Colo.), ordinarily a competitive bunch that generally battles Raton close, 26-25 in week one.

  • Youth Soccer - Sept. 13, 2013

    The Las Vegas Youth Soccer League has kicked off its fall 2013 slate, which will run through Oct. 27.
    Approximately 300 youngsters age 4-12 are competing in 28 teams split among four age divisions. The LVYSL is run by volunteers, including a board led by presidents Shelby and Rachel Curtis.
    This year the league is carrying a World Cup theme, with teams named for various countries. The FIFA men’s World Cup takes place in 2014.

  • Lady Cards pitch shutout vs....

    Back in the hunt for a state scoring title, Caitlin Diefendorf booted four goals on Monday evening to lead the Robertson girls’ soccer team (5-3) past visiting Moreno Valley, 8-0.

    The Beasties roared to a 6-0 halftime lead. Then, playing a number of younger members of the roster, RHS head coach Ian Williamson got a couple of second-half goals from his charges.

  • RHS girls’ XC third at Del Norte

    Even shorthanded — missing two of the projected varsity runners — the Robertson girls’ cross country team managed to grab third place as a team in this past weekend’s Del Norte Invitational.
    Annabella Miller set the tone, striding into sixth place with a time of 24:42.
    Fellow Lady Cardinals Elena Garcia, Esperanza Martinez and Morgan Diefendorf finished in close succession in 12th, 13th and 14th place. Garcia finished in 26:12, Martinez in 26:38 and Diefendorf in 26:39.

  • Cowgirls win 3 in Texas tourney

    New Mexico Highlands volleyball player Alicia Moreno was brilliant in her performance this past weekend at the 2013 Hampton Inn Invitational.
    Her work earned her a selection to the All-Tournament Team.
    During this past weekend’s tournament, the Cowgirls split the first day of competition. On the second day, the Cowgirls were completely dominant. They swept both Saturday matches in three sets each.

  • Go Fish - Sept. 13, 2013

    FISHING REPORT,
    Sept. 10
    Charette Lakes: Due to low water levels only small boats are being launched here and with some difficulty. Fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait, Pistol Petes tipped with worm and grasshoppers for rainbow trout. We had no reports on perch.
    Cimarron River: Water flow below Eagle Nest Lake on Monday was 27 cfs. Trout fishing was good using zebra midges, stimulators, elk hair caddis, brassies, worms and salmon eggs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using salmon eggs, worms and Pistol Petes.

  • City league champs crowned

    The Benavidez Construction Hackers spent the summer much like they have for the past several — beating almost everyone in front of them and winning championship trophies.

    The Hackers wrapped up the Las Vegas Adult Softball League schedule in late August by adding a men’s division tournament title to their regular season bragging rights.

    It came down to a battle between No. 1 and No. 2 squads from the regular season in the Aug. 29 final, with the top dogs prevailing yet again, extending their run past the half-dozen mark.

  • LV women’s golfers vie for prizes

    The Las Vegas Women’s Golf Association members have been busy — hosting an invitational tournament on the last week of August and then competing for a club championship on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

    To be exact, 14 LVWGA members competed for the club championship at New Mexico Highlands University’s Gene Torres Golf Course.

    The winner of the low gross, Tangee Dolan, beat Anne Pepper in a one-hole playoff.

    Betsy Block won the low net.
