  • Stu Clark tourney under way

    An annual holiday treat for more than half a century, the 56th annual Stu Clark Tournament is tipping off today at the Wilson Complex.

    Tickets and tourney passes are available at the door and from various local merchants.

    In the opening session (1 and 3 p.m.), Stu Clark newcomer Del Norte takes on St. Pius X, and Artesia meets Portales.

    Day one’s evening session features West Las Vegas vs. Shiprock at 6 p.m., followed by Robertson vs. Bernalillo at 8.

    Monday winners play in the evening session on Tuesday; losers in the afternoon session.

  • Martinez is All-State player

    Robertson junior Daniel Martinez racked up more than 1,000 yards rushing as a quarterback for this year’s Cardinal football team.

    But it was Martinez’s defense that earned him a spot on the first team All-State as chosen by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.

    Martinez’s work as a linebacker, one of the team leaders in tackles and pass break-ups, landed him on the first team. St. Michael’s linebackers Michael Aranda and Michael Lamb were other District 2-3A first-teamers.

  • WLV third in Lujan tourney

    Overcoming an uncharacteristically sluggish start, the West Las Vegas Lady Dons cranked up the defensive heat Wednesday night in a 35-24 win over host Pojoaque Valley in the third-place game of the Ben Lujan Invitational.

    It was a significant victory for West (8-1) in that it came against a respected District 2-3A rival and defending state champion playing at home.

    From the opening tip Wednesday, defense dictated the contest. Pojoaque was a little bit stingier in controlling a 10-2 first period.

  • Amarillo a test for young Cards

    Looking to toughen his team, Robertson wrestling coach Richard Martinez added a duals tournament in Amarillo, Texas, to the schedule this year.

    Wins were difficult to come by in the event, held this past week, but count the Cardinals tougher for the experience.

  • Cowboy slugger Carr honored

    New Mexico Highlands University baseball standout Jason Carr has been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association 2010 NCAA Division II Preseason All-America second team.

    Carr, a 6-5, 225-pound senior from Puyallup, Wash., was a menace in the batter’s box the entire 2009 season for the Cowboys.

    He was tied for second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with 15 home runs. Carr was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All Central Region team in the 2009 season. Carr was also All-RMAC first team in the 2009 season.

  • Lobo baseball camp coming to LV

    ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- The University of New Mexico will soon enter its final round of winter baseball camps before the start of the 2010 season, and the Meadow City is scheduled to be one of the camp sites.

    Players age 7-13 are advised to hurry to secure their spot in the final two camps, to be held on Jan. 17 in Las Vegas, N.M., and on Jan. 30 in Albuquerque at the West Mesa Little League Park. Cost is $100 per camper.

  • Dunn's return shot in arm...

    As the leading rebounder and one of the leading scorers of last season’s record turnaround team, New Mexico Highlands post Chris Dunn made a major impact on the Cowboys’ fortunes in 2008-09.

    On Saturday, Dunn picked up where he left off. The athletic, rambunctious forward tallied 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks to lead the Cowboys to a 76-60 win over Carroll College, an NAIA school from Montana, on a neutral court in Denver.

  • Making a splash

    Miranda Martinez and Vanessa Lucero led an effective outside-inside punch, scoring 17 points apiece Monday afternoon in a 69-51 win over Grants in the first round of the Ben Lujan Invitational on the campus of Pojoaque High School.

    West (7-0) was to play Española (8-2) in one of two semifinals Tuesday night. The Lady Sundevils bullied Class 2A Peñasco 48-36 on Monday. In the other semifinal, host Pojoaque, a 32-28 winner over Cimarron, was to match up with Socorro, a 67-44 victor over Taos.
