  • Twin sweeps for Vegas softball...

    Strengthening their respective positions in the District 2-3A race, both of Las Vegas’ softball teams held their ground Saturday in sweeping doubleheaders against visiting Raton and Taos.

    Meanwhile, Robertson baseball earned a split to bolster its standing as West Las Vegas took a hit with a twinbill loss at home.

    Robertson’s Lady Cardinals knocked Raton down a peg or two from their lofty place in the state rankings with wins of 13-8 and 8-6.

  • Cowboys sweep Cougars

    Weathering one huge inning from their Colorado Christian hosts, the New Mexico Highlands University Cowboys did all the talking the rest of the game Saturday in Lakewood, Colo., in a 16-8 victory.

    The win clinched a series win for NMHU following Friday’s doubleheader sweep. Then it became a sweep as the visitors won 13-4 in the finale late Saturday.

    Highlands — winner of eight consecutive games — is 22-15 overall and 19-8 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

  • RHS netters 2nd in meet

    Robertson’s tennis teams landed twin second-place finishes in the Las Cruces-Mayfield Invitational held over the weekend.

    Carlsbad was first in the boys’ draw, while Mayfield was first on the girls’ side.

    Robertson is scheduled to play at Albuquerque Academy on Wednesday afternoon.

  • Key home games Saturday for LV...

    District baseball and softball rolls on this weekend with key home games for both Robertson and West Las Vegas on Saturday.

    The Cardinals and Lady Cardinals play host to Raton, while the Dons and Lady Dons entertain Taos. First pitch for all four doubleheaders is set for 11 a.m.

    Robertson baseball lost a strong non-district test at St. Michael’s by a 4-2 count on Wednesday in Santa Fe.

    West Las Vegas baseball is coming off an 8-0 shutout loss at Raton on Tuesday.

    The Lady Dons came up shy in a 10-0 defeat, also Tuesday at Raton.

  • Isotopes off to good start

    Brian Cavazos-Galvez is back.

    The Albuquerque native and graduate of Manzano High and UNM, who has family ties to the Las Vegas area, has rejoined the Albuquerque Isotopes for the start of the 2014 season.

    Cavazos-Galvez played with the club a couple years ago but spent 2013 with the Dodgers’ Double-A outfit in Chattanooga, Tenn.

  • Luna splits with NMJC

    The Luna Community College baseball team took two games from conference foe New Mexico Junior College over the weekend.

    After winning the first game 6-2 on Friday, the Rough Riders were downed 13-0.

    On Saturday, the Rough Riders lost the first game 5-1 before bouncing back to win the final game of the series 9-8.

    The Rough Riders are 12-23 overall and 8-12 in conference play.

    The squad is scheduled to take on Western Texas College in Snyder, Texas, on Friday and Saturday.

  • Youth Soccer - April 11

    David Kenyon with the popular Challenger British Soccer Camp will be conducting a free skills clinic for young soccer players in the Las Vegas area on Monday evening at the Commerce Street Park.

    The event is open to all, although current players and coaches in the Las Vegas Youth Soccer League are encouraged to attend as teams.

    Players age 6 and younger are invited to join Kenyon from 5 to 6 p.m.; those 7 and older from 6 to 7 p.m.

  • Little Leagues - April 11

    Opening Day ceremonies for La Plaza Little League will take place on Saturday morning at the Rodriguez park complex, to be followed by a full day of games.
