  • West rocks its own meet

    Individual victories in six events and solid performances elsewhere helped the West Las Vegas girls’ track and field squad secure a team championship this past weekend at the Herrera Complex.

    The Lady Dons and Robertson’s Lady Cardinals finished one-two in the girls’ standings, edging St. Mike’s.

    On the boys’ side, the host Dons were a runner-up to the Horsemen.

  • Jones gets spotlight at...

    SANTA FE  — NMHU baseball head coach Steve Jones was recently recognized by the New Mexico State Senate for eclipsing the 500 career wins milestone this season.  

    Jones is currently in his 16th season at the helm of the Cowboys.  

  • Omaha tops Isotopes

    Scott Van Slyke belted two home runs. Dodgers pitcher Ted Lilly made a rehab start on the mound.

    Still, the visiting Omaha Storm Chasers prevailed 6-3 Wednesday night, sweeping a doubleheader from the Albuquerque Isotopes.

    Albuquerque fell to 4-3, having lost three of four to follow a 3-0 start, all at home.

    Van Slyke, who leads the ‘Topes in hitting (.625, 15 hits) and home runs (four), went 2 for 3 in the nightcap but the rest of the team combined for just three hits.

  • Go Fish - April 12, 2013

    FISHING REPORT,
    April 9:
    Charette Lakes: Fishing was slow but there were a few trout taken by anglers using Power Bait and salmon eggs.
    Conchas Lake: Bank fishing was fair using grubs, nightcrawlers and spinners for walleye. A few black bass were caught by anglers using spinner baits and jerk baits. Fishing was fair using stink bait and liver for catfish.
    Coyote Creek: No reports.

    ALBUQUERQUE — Efforts from Sheneika Rochester, Michelle Traynham and the 400-meter relay team highlighted a strong team performance by the New Mexico Highlands Unversity women’s track and field squad at the Don Kirby Tailwind Invitational Saturday in Albuquerque.

  • Tough week for Riders

    Luna Community College

    The Luna Community College softball team lost three of four games to Odessa College. The Lady Rough Riders took a 9-6 win in the second game on Friday.

    They lost game one 7-1, game three 13-7 and game four 6-1. They host Howard College on Friday and Saturday in scheduled doubleheaders.

    The Rough Rider baseball team lost four games to New Mexico Junior College on the road. The Rough Riders lost 6-5, 10-6, 7-3 and 9-8. They host Western Texas College on Friday and Saturday.

  • Bazuin, Ward go yard vs. Rangers

    A late-inning surge gave New Mexico Highlands a 12-6 victory at Regis in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference baseball on Sunday afternoon in Denver.

    Mike Bazuin and Derek Ward hit home runs and Jarred Middleton capped a fine weekend by going 3 for 4 at the plate for NMHU (19-15 overall, 15-9 RMAC).

    Sunday’s win gave Highlands a three-games-to-one series victory over the host Rangers (17-9, 12-8). The team hosts Colorado Christian this coming weekend at Brandt Park. The Cougars are 4-27, 2-20.
