  • Weekend Roundup - Lucero lights...

Homecoming 2013 proved to be soothing for the Robertson football program.

Following back-to-back losses to Class 2A and 3A state champions, the Cardinals reversed course with a 47-8 blowout of Capital on Friday night at Cardinal Stadium.

Itching to get back on the field after being required to sit out the St. Mike’s game, Dominic Lucero delivered his most explosive effort yet.

  • Running with heart

It has been a trying month for Leandro Garduño and the rest of his family.

But Saturday was all right — a ray of sunshine amid the clouds.

Garduño, a standout cross country runner at Memorial Middle School, lost his stepfather Felipe a couple of weeks ago to an extended battle with cancer.

It was devastating news for him and sister Esperanza, a varsity runner at West Las Vegas. Esperanza didn’t compete in the Belen meet with her teammates so she could be with her family.

  • NMHU runners No. 11 in nation

Coming off a win at the West Texas A&M Buffalo Stampede, the New Mexico Highlands University men’s cross country team held on to the No. 11 ranking in the nation in the USTFCCCA poll released Tuesday.

Buena Vista native Alonzo Chavez won his first collegiate race and led the Cowboy runners to victory this past Saturday in Canyon, Texas.

  • Birds hope for homecoming respite

Robertson head football coach Leroy Gonzalez has stuck with a familiar refrain the past several seasons — play a bunch of tough schools early to get his team battle-tested in time for the District 2-3A portion of the schedule.

It’s a formula that has worked in terms of district competitiveness, although the rigorous early slate tends to take a toll.

  • Highlands teams fall to national...

Nobody could much argue about strength of schedule for New Mexico Highlands opponents this past week.

The NMHU women’s soccer and volleyball teams both faced nationally ranked teams in recent days, with both meetings resulting in defeat.

For Cowgirl soccer, Wednesday night’s 2-1 loss at Fort Lewis in Durango, Colo., was the squad’s first blemish of the fall schedule.

Fort Lewis came into the match ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division II.

  • Twin wins
