  • The Wright stuff

    For the second time in as many weeks, New Mexico Highlands 125-pounder Seth Wright conquered the No. 1 wrestler in the nation in his weight class.

    This week’s upset came Thursday night in a 5-0 shutout of Tommy Edgmon of Fort Hays State. Wright’s win was one of just two for the Cowboys that night, as NMHU hosted its long-awaited first home event of the season but lost 31-9.

    Wright took a 2-0 edge to the final period but doubled it and frustrated Edgmon with his defense and quickness.

  • Mora native a Hall of Famer

    With much of his family in attendance, Matt Martinez, a native of Mora, was inducted into the Northern Rio Grande Hall of Fame on Saturday, Jan. 16.

    It was a Mora night as Pojoaque’s interim superintendent Ruben Cordova of Ojo Feliz was present, and Manuel Romero — another graduate of Mora High — led his Peñasco Panthers to the championship at this year’s NRG Tournament.

    Martinez graduated from Mora High School in 1976 and played basketball for coaches Arthur Romero and Douglas Velarde.

  • Mixed results at the Joe

    Daniel Martinez came away with a runner-up finish in the toughest high school wrestling tournament in New Mexico. Meanwhile, his Robertson teammate Estevan Vigil took a fourth-place medal, highlighting the Las Vegas contingent’s mat work at the Joe Vivian Invitational this past weekend at Albuquerque’s Cibola High.

    Powered by three first-place finishes, Rio Rancho was supreme among the three dozen teams in the field. Volcano Vista won four individual titles and was second. Moriarty, Cibola and La Cueva rounded out the top five.

  • NMHU's James kicks to 400...

    Highlands’ Fiona James outkicked everyone else to win the women’s 400-meter dash at the University of New Mexico’s spring Lobo Opener this past Saturday in Albuquerque.

    And UNM frosh Marin Schweigert, who won state titles in the event for Robertson, claimed the top prize in the high jump.

    James’ time of 59.7 seconds was the only one under a minute in the event, which included runners from Division I UNM and New Mexico State, as well as NMHU’s Courtney Lewis (sixth, 1:03.97) and Sessyon Crawford (eighth, 1:09.02).

  • NMHU wrestler RMAC honoree

    After stunning the nation’s top-ranked grappler in his 125-pound weight class, New Mexico Highlands University’s Seth Wright earned Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week honors this past week.

    Wright is 7-3 (2-0 RMAC) as the Cowboys prepare for their long-awaited home debut Thursday night against Fort Hays State, followed by a Saturday matinee against tough Central Oklahoma.  Wright upset defending national champion Arsenia Barksdale, the No. 1 rated 125 in NCAA Division II, in a 9-4 decision as the Cowboys visited Adams State.

  • 'I did it'

    Last week, Sipapu ski shop employee and Las Trampas native Frank Lopez made one extraordinary trip down the mountain at Sipapu. His legs were shaky, and his skis didn’t go very fast. However, this amazing journey had nothing do with his form or speed: Frank was skiing under his own power after countless doctors told him he’d never walk again.

  • Big bench play helps Highlands...

    Balanced scoring and superior bench productivity enabled host New Mexico Highlands to neutralize Matt Rosinski, Regis’ big gun, in an 86-68 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s basketball win Saturday night at the Wilson Complex.

    The Cowboys salvaged a weekend split after having lost to nationally ranked Metro State by a 97-79 margin Friday.

    NMHU (9-6 overall, 3-4 RMAC) and coach Joe Harge host Mesa State and Western State this Friday and Saturday to continue the homestand.

  • Armijo's late bucket lifts...

    Jessica Armijo’s 10-foot jump shot with 17 seconds left broke a 64-64 tie and nudged New Mexico Highlands toward a 67-65 victory over Regis on Saturday night at the Wilson Complex.

    With this, their second Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win of the season, the Cowgirls have now doubled last season’s win total within league play. The outcome also pushed NMHU to the .500 mark at 7-7 overall. Coach Tiffany Darling and her team are 2-5 in the RMAC with Mesa State and Western State coming to town this weekend.

  • Dons fifth in Dexter tourney

    Tomas Benavidez scored 14 points and Ambrosio Castellano tallied 13 for West Las Vegas, helping the Dons to a 51-42 win over Cloudcroft Saturday in the fifth-place game of the Dexter Invitational.

    It was an uplifting weekend for the West boys, who bounced back from a 79-64 opening round loss to Hagerman to win their last two games. The Dons defeated Hot Springs 64-52 on Friday, reaching the consolation final.

    On Saturday, WLV built a modest early lead on Cloudcroft and began to pull away in the second quarter, taking a 31-22 halftime lead.

  • RHS girls roll in Santa Fe

    Miranda Garcia led all scorers with 17 points Tuesday night as Robertson won convincingly, 53-31 at Santa Fe High.

    Karlee Bradley (12 points, four assists, six steals) and Kassandra Tapia (11 points, 15 rebounds, five assists) also reached double figures; Daniella Montoya added four assists and six steals for the eighth-ranked Lady Cardinals, who play in an Aztec tournament this weekend.
