    FULLERTON, Calif. — Nick Crucet hit a go-ahead RBI single in the 13th inning and Columbia held on to earn its first NCAA tournament win with a 6-5 victory over New Mexico on Saturday night in the Fullerton regional.

    The Lions (28-20) scored five runs in the eighth inning to erase a 5-0 deficit, getting the last three runs with two outs. Columbia was to play the loser of the Arizona State-Cal State Fullerton matchup.

  • First time for everything

    The Las Vegas Train Robbers stayed on the tracks of a recent winning streak Tuesday night, chugging past the .500 mark for the first time as they made their home debut.

    An estimated crowd of 200 was on hand to see the Robbers down the visiting Taos Blizzard 18-6 at Rodriguez Park. Las Vegas improved to 7-6, second place in the division behind Trinidad.

    “We’re an incredible offensive team,” said Las Vegas manager Casey Dill. “As well as we hit the ball, we have a chance to win every night.”

  • Cowgirls in outdoor nationals

    Capping a strong overall season for the New Mexico Highlands women’s track and field program, two Cowgirl athletes represented the school in the NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships hosted by Colorado State-Pueblo May 23-25.

    NMHU junior Sheneika Rochester ran the 100-meter dash in 11.85 seconds, just off the qualifying time for the finals. Rochester’s time was the 17th fastest of the 23 sprinters but was just 16 hundredths of a second behind Samantha Bogatz of Grand Canyon, the last to make the cut from the preliminary heats.

  • Iconic coach steps down

    After more than three decades in education and coaching, Cindy Roybal is stepping down from her head girls’ basketball coaching post at Santa Fe Indian School.

    “It wasn’t an easy decision; I love these girls,” said Roybal. “Basketball and education have been very good to me, but all good things must come to and end. I look forward to this next chapter in my life and whatever it has in store for me.”

    Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.   
    Cimarron River: Water flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 72 cfs. Trout fishing was good using Panther Martins, elk hair caddis, Cimarron specials, salmon eggs and worms. We had no reports from the Gravel Pit Lakes.

  • Crespin back in ring on Friday

    Las Vegas professional boxer Arturo “El Toro” Crespin will make his long-awaited return to the ring this coming weekend.

    Crespin is due to fight Charles Alderete in a six-round middleweight bout on Friday at Crowne Plaza Hotel in Albuquerque.

    For ticket information, locals can contact Carlos Crespin, 429-4068. Tickets range from $25 to $75.

    The fight is part of a card headlined by an eight-round welterweight battle between Josh “Pitbull” Torres and Marcus Brashears.
