  • Rangerettes top Lady Dons

If Mora volleyball coach Jacquelyn Sanchez was feeling vindication Tuesday night after her current team’s defeat of her former team, West Las Vegas, she wasn’t showing it too much.

A Facebook post by Sanchez praised her Rangerettes but also credited the Lady Dons for “a tough game” in the 3-1 Mora victory at Gillie Lopez Gym.
Mora had a better defensive effort than it showed in a 3-2 loss at Robertson on Sept. 6, with the back row getting to most of the Lady Dons’ attacks. And despite giving up a height advantage across the front line, the Rangerettes held their own up front as well.

  • RHS boys golf wins Raton fall...

After watching their girls’ team counterparts hog all the headlines in recent years, the Robertson boys’ golf crew may be poised to take its turn in the spotlight.

The Cardinals won their first event of the fall schedule this past Monday, posting a team score of 363 to take the title in the Raton Invitational.

“It’s a good showing because Raton is a top team in our district,” said Gene Gurule, who is head coach of both boys’ and girls’ golf at Robertson.

  • Phillies clinch playoff spot

HOUSTON — Roy Halladay pitched his 20th career shutout and the Philadelphia Phillies became the first team to reach the playoffs this season with a 1-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Wednesday.

The NL East leaders clinched at least a wild-card berth and will appear in the postseason for the fifth straight year. Philadelphia won the World Series in 2008 and took the NL pennant in 2009.

Once the club signed ace Cliff Lee last winter to round out a dominant rotation, another playoff berth for Philadelphia seemed a foregone conclusion.
