  • Chavez stars in elite meet

It’s been a while since Alonzo Chavez first proved he can hang with the best high school distance runners in New Mexico, regardless of school size or classification.

On Monday, he proved something more.

Chavez left his competition battling for second place in both the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter runs. That alone is hardly news, but this day’s triumph came at the Marilyn Sepulveda Invitational, a track and field meet reserved for the state’s elite prep tracksters from big schools to small.

  • Cowboys ride huge third inning

Prolific hitting and the penchant for multiple-run innings are typical for a Steve Jones-coached Highlands baseball team.

But the bottom of the third inning Sunday was something else altogether.

After neither team scored through the first two and a half frames, NMHU pinned nine runs on Colorado Christian in that inning and coasted to a 9-3 victory at Brandt Park.

The win gave Highlands a series split with the Cougars, who’d entered the weekend with only four wins.

  • Dons first, Lady Dons second in...

Following up on a strong team finish in their own West Las Vegas Invitational, the Dons and Lady Dons finished first and second, respectively, in the boys’ and girls’ divisions of the Fort Sumner Qualifier this past Saturday.

On the boys’ side, West compiled 116.5 team points to seize first place, outpointing second-place Tucumcari (90) and third-place Santa Rosa (87) in a 12-school field.

  • Four homers for ‘Topes

While professional baseball honored Jackie Robinson Monday, the Albuquerque Isotopes paid tribute with four jacks in an 11-5 clobbering of Iowa.

Isotopes first baseman Scott Van Slyke went 2 for 4 with two home runs to boost his Pacific Coast League-leading total to six.

Also dangerous on the offensive end was Albuquerque shortstop Dee Gordon, who connected three times in five at-bats — including a two-run triple — for three RBI and stole three bases. His eight thefts is first in the PCL this spring.
