  • Club qualifies 2 for nationals

Nicholas Gurule won a regional championship in the javelin, and Sal Lopez placed top three in both javelin and discus at the recent Junior Olympic regional meet in El Paso.

Both are now headed to nationals this coming week in Baltimore.

It’s an early milestone for the Meadow City Track Club, rejuvenated this year under coach Morgan Montaño.

“These kids who’ve started it up have definitely put in the time and effort,” Montaño said.

  • Memorial run an all-ages event

Barely old enough to walk on his own, 1-year-old Quentin Martinez was one of the youngest competitors in this past Las Vegas Fiesta Memorial Run.

Participating in the annual event is one thing young Quentin has in common with 87-year-old Bill Oshima, who took on the 5-kilometer walk stretching from the San Miguel County Fairgrounds down to the Old Town Plaza, finishing in 57:40.

In the 1980s, Michael Cooper was wearing No. 21 and playing an integral role in helping the Los Angeles Lakers win world championships, playing alongside legends like Magic Johnson, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy.

Today, the former UNM Lobo and Laker wing is coaching at the University of Southern Colorado and even making time for youth basketball camps — including one scheduled for July 28-29 at Robertson’s Mike Marr Gymnasium.
Geared toward players age 5-17, the camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

The camp will be from 8 a.m. to noon at the RHS soccer field at 3rd and Mills.

“Kids age 5-12 are encouraged to join us,” wrote Caitlin Diefendorf, one of the Lady Cardinals’ standouts. “The camp is a great way for local kids to have fun and learn new soccer skills from the high school girls’ soccer team.

  • ‘Two out of three ain’t bad’

The Nasty North owned Friday night — and came pretty close to making it a clean sweep of the Dirty South on Saturday.

In this past weekend’s Class 2A-3A North-South All-Star games, the action followed the traditional script, with the North teams holding court in basketball and the South taking care of business on the gridiron.

Michael Phelps, in the pool, raising a fist. Usain Bolt, on the track, slapping his chest.

They are the two indelible images of the 2008 Beijing Olympics — celebration after celebration of gold medals and world records by the American swimmer and the Jamaican sprinter. Because of what they did four years ago, all eyes will be on them when they return to their sports’ biggest stages during the London Games, which open July 27.
