  • Lady Dons smother Ruidoso

As West Las Vegas girls’ basketball program paid tribute to its parents on Monday night, the evening felt a lot like homecoming.

The Lady Dons feasted on overmatched Ruidoso 70-39 to wrap up their home schedule.

The non-district Lady Warriors hung around and stayed closer than expected before West hit the accelerator and pulled away down the stretch.

WLV’s lead was a modest 17-10 after eight minutes.

SOCHI, Russia — Different American, same result for Maria Hoefl-Riesch — another Olympic gold in the super-combined.

Just as she did four years ago at the Vancouver Games, Hoefl-Riesch found herself trailing an American after the downhill leg before using her slalom skills to vault into first place and successfully defend her Olympic title in the dual-run event.

  • West’s depth overwhelms RHS

The largest basketball crowd at Mike Marr Gym this winter witnessed a game effort from the host Cardinals, as well as a pretty decent clinic of hoops from the victorious West Las Vegas Dons on Saturday night.

West won 88-54 to remain unbeaten in District 2-3A boys’ basketball this season under David Bustos. The Dons are 15-6 overall and 5-0 in 2-3A.

Robertson (9-14, 2-3) saw its win streak end at two games. Manuel Romero’s group had won at Socorro 63-53 on Tuesday and at Pojoaque Valley 63-46 on Thursday.

  • Steady win secured by Lady Dons

There were no “Why so quiet?” taunts from the Robertson crowd this time around.

West Las Vegas fans were joyfully noisy Friday night as they watched their Lady Dons lead from start to finish in a 59-47 triumph over the host Lady Cardinals at Mike Marr Gym.

Given the competitive environment of the division this winter, it was a much-needed get-even win for West, which had lost its only District 2-3A game to date at the hands of RHS on Jan. 22 at Gillie Lopez Gym.
