  • Run ends in regional

SANTA FE — One of the deepest runs ever made by a Little League team from the Meadow City has come to an end.

The New Mexico All-Stars of the Juniors (age 13-14) softball division went 1-2, unofficially finishing third, in the Southwest Regional Championship tournament this past week in Santa Fe. The run came to an end with Monday’s 8-2 loss to Texas West at Bicentennial Park.

  • Cowboys picked third in RMAC

Look for the New Mexico Highlands University football team to contend for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship this season.

The Cowboys were projected as the No. 3 team in the 10-team league according to a preseason coaches’ poll released Monday by the RMAC’s Colorado Springs-based office.

  • Grizzlies shut out Isotopes

    Las Vegas Optic and
    Albuquerque Isotopes

Matt Angle had the Fresno Grizzlies all figured out on Monday night.

Unfortunately for Albuquerque, the same could not be said for his teammates.

Fresno dealt the struggling Isotopes a 2-0 loss, dropping them further behind Oklahoma City in the Pacific Coast League’s American Southern Division.

Angle, Albuquerque’s centerfielder, went 3 for 3 at the plate with one walk, thus reaching base all four at-bats — ideal for a leadoff hitter.

  • Football practice starts in LV

For the first time this summer — officially, anyway — area high school football players took to the practice fields on Monday, launching the 2013 preseason.

Monday was the first day allowed for prep football practice by the New Mexico Activities Association. Locally, squads at Robertson and West Las Vegas could be seen putting in workouts.

Memorial Middle School announced the start of its football practices as well.

  • Strong start for NM juniors...

    Las Vegas Optic

Now representing the entire state of New Mexico, Las Vegas Little League’s Juniors (age 13-14) All-Star softball team began its quest for nationals on a positive note this past Friday.

Clad in red New Mexico All-Stars uniforms, the local squad defeated a team from Louisiana 12-3 on the second day of the Southwest Regional Championships.
