  • City league champs crowned

The Benavidez Construction Hackers spent the summer much like they have for the past several — beating almost everyone in front of them and winning championship trophies.

The Hackers wrapped up the Las Vegas Adult Softball League schedule in late August by adding a men’s division tournament title to their regular season bragging rights.

It came down to a battle between No. 1 and No. 2 squads from the regular season in the Aug. 29 final, with the top dogs prevailing yet again, extending their run past the half-dozen mark.

To be exact, 14 LVWGA members competed for the club championship at New Mexico Highlands University’s Gene Torres Golf Course.

The winner of the low gross, Tangee Dolan, beat Anne Pepper in a one-hole playoff.

Betsy Block won the low net.

Among a crowded field of distance runners participating in this past weekend’s Joe Vigil Invitational in Alamosa, Colo., the green and white of Pecos High lent some northern New Mexico color to the proceedings.

It was the football season opener for both schools.

Lewis finished 15 of 27 for 182 yards with one TD and one interception; he was also one of the Cowboys’ leading rushers with 78 yards on 11 carries. Ricky Marvay, one of the new-look receiving corps, made six catches for 100 yards.

Off to a 3-0 start, the Lady Dons encountered tough blocking from the Lady Cats and had to find other ways to crack their defense.
