  • Strong start for NMHU runners

    ALAMOSA, Colo. — The New Mexico Highlands University men’s and women’s cross country teams had a very good start to the 2013 season at the Joe I. Vigil Invitational hosted by Adams State University.

    The Cowboy cross country team finished second at the Joe Vigil Invitational, placing three runners in the top 15 and five Cowboys in front of the No. 1 runner from Fort Lewis College (ranked 20th in the nation).

  • Vegas spikers double trouble for...

    The Meadow City's high school volleyball teams were rude visitors to Lovington over the weekend, dropping the host Lady Wildcats in quick succession.

    After falling 25-17 in the first set, West Las Vegas won three in a row, 25-10, 27-25, 25-22.

    Off to a 3-0 start, the Lady Dons encountered tough blocking from the Lady Cats and had to find other ways to crack their defense.

    "(Our) hitting was 19 percent, down in this area," said coach Mary Bustos. "Lovington blocked us well."

  • Golf fest hailed a success

    Golfers from Albuquerque, Santa Fe and Pendaries competed with Las Vegas Women’s Golf Association players in their annual Fiesta De Golf Tournament on Aug. 28 at the Gene Torres Golf Course.

    “A perfect day, the Highlands course in excellent condition and club members’ delicious home-made muffins, breakfast burritos, fruit salad and cookies, a taco buffet lunch along with gift bags and door prizes made for fun-filled companionship,” said Anne Pepper of the LVWGA.

  • LV spikers score solid early...

    Back-to-back service aces by Jenika Padilla put an exclamation mark on West Las Vegas’ decisive 3-1 volleyball win over St. Michael’s on Tuesday evening at Gillie Lopez Gym.

    It was a good night across the board for Meadow City spikers. Up Highway 518 at Montoya Gym, the Robertson Lady Cardinals found a way to defeat the always tough Mora Rangerettes in a 3-2 nailbiter.

  • Football: Cowboys to visit Hounds

    After posting one of its best records in years, the New Mexico Highlands University football team is looking for more where that came from.

    And it all begins Saturday night at Blackwater Draw and Greyhounds Stadium, where  Eastern New Mexico awaits in the season opener for both schools. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

    Eastern finished 3-7 overall and 2-6 in the Lone Star Conference last season.

    The Cowboys went 8-3 overall and 7-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The first win was a 42-14 tally against the Hounds at Perkins Stadium.

    Charette Lakes: Due to low water levels only small boats are being launched here and with some difficulty. We had no reports from anglers this week.
    Cimarron River: Water flow below Eagle Nest Lake on Monday was 27 cfs. Trout fishing was good using zebra midges, Cimarron specials, stimulators, elk hair caddis, brassies, worms and salmon eggs. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair to good using salmon eggs, worms and Pistol Petes.

  • Repeat title for RHS

    For the second consecutive year, the Robertson girls’ soccer team captured the championship of the Rehoboth Christian tournament, which took place over the weekend.

    The Lady Cardinals didn’t allow a single goal in their three-match run, shutting out Hatch Valley 8-0, Navajo Prep 5-0 and host Rehoboth 4-0.

    Juniors Caitlin Diefendorf and Amber Yara scored two goals apiece and freshman Victoria Valdez added one in the win over Navajo Prep on Saturday morning. Sophomore Nicoletta Litherland and frosh Ruby Marquez split time at goalkeeper.

  • Isotopes end slate with win

    METAIRIE, La. — Matt Angle hit a two-run home run into the hot tub at Zephyr Field and the Albuquerque Isotopes closed out the 2013 season Monday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over the New Orleans Zephyrs.

    The Isotopes end the season with a record of 76-68, in second place in the PCL’s American Southern division, six games out of first place, and three games ahead of third-place Round Rock.
