  • YABL sign-ups starting

    Las Vegas Optic

    The City of Las Vegas announces its Young American Basketball League registration periods and a YABL volunteer coaches meeting on the upcoming calendar.

    • For girls’ YABL  (third and fourth grade division and fifth through seventh division), as well as the co-ed kindergarten through second grade division, the registration deadline is Monday, Nov. 7.
    Entry fee is $40.

    A mandatory player evaluation session will take place Tuesday, Nov. 8, at the Abe Montoya Recreation Center.

  • Vatos win High Desert Classic

    Thirty-five members strong, the NMHU Rugby Club Vatos (11-3-1) won the College Division of the 40th Annual High Desert Classic Rugby Tournament this past weekend in Albuquerque.

    On Saturday, the Vatos easily won their pool by defeating New Mexico State  34-10 and Northern Arizona University 19-7 to advance to the semifinals.

  • Vegas Bowl Jr. is Thursday

    For the second consecutive season, the Meadow City’s two middle school football teams carry undefeated records into their head-to-head meeting on the gridiron.

    Memorial Middle School is 6-0 and West Las Vegas Middle School is 5-0 as they prepare for Thursday’s Vegas Bowl Junior under the lights at Perkins Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. — moved back from the original 4 p.m. — and gates open at 5:30. Tickets are $3 adults and $1 students.

  • Cowgirls stun No. 15 Mines

    Pulling away with three second-half goals for a 4-1 triumph, New Mexico Highlands University surprised Colorado School of Mines, the 15th ranked team in NCAA Division II women’s soccer, on Sunday at Perkins Stadium.

    Highlands is now 9-6 overall and 7-4 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Mines falls to 11-2-1 and 7-2-1, respectively.

    Julissa Rodriguez and Janelle McGee each scored two goals and had one assist apiece for the Cowgirls, who visit Colorado Mesa on Friday in Grand Junction.

    Winning ugly is far better than losing pretty, as far as Robertson boys’ soccer coach Clarence Montoya is concerned.

    His Cardinals did the former in a 3-1 tally against visiting Pojoaque Valley on Monday on campus, extending their season-long winning streak to four games.

    Robertson and Pojoaque traded one broken possession after another on a warm afternoon in Las Vegas that felt more like a lazy early summer day.
