  • Weather scratches Saturday slate

    A last-second shot by Mother Nature gave winter a bit of overtime in northern New Mexico — and it put a number of spring sporting events on ice in the process.

    New Mexico Highlands University and the two local high schools had scheduled a full weekend of baseball and softball in town, but Friday’s intense snowstorm scratched those plans. Instead, many local sports fans stayed indoors and tuned in to March Madness hoops on TV.

  • Sundevils burn Dons

    Ross Duran’s RBI triple to right field in the top of the fourth inning Thursday sparked seven straight runs for Española Valley as the Sundevils dropped West Las Vegas 9-3 in a non-district baseball matchup.

    The Sundevils led 2-0 midway through the second inning. In the bottom of the frame, Alex Branch singled to drive in Emanuel Blea, who’d gotten on with a double. West later loaded the bases but a flyout by Corey Archibeque ended the inning.

  • Outlaws jam Sting

    The Las Vegas Outlaws football team evened its spring season record at 1-1 over the weekend with a 14-0 road shutout of the Santa Fe Sting.

    The Outlaws, who heretofore played most home games at New Mexico Highlands University’s Perkins Stadium, will host the Taylor Ranch Trojans this Sunday at West Las Vegas’ Herrera Complex.

    Rashaad Jackson rushed for 150 yards and a 5-yard touchdown this past weekend to lead Las Vegas past the Sting.

  • Cowboys up to 11th

    Fresh off a series win over league rival Metropolitan State College of Denver — and a No. 11 national ranking by one notable baseball publication — the New Mexico Highlands University baseball team has solidified its hold on first place in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

    NMHU will host Colorado State-Pueblo beginning with a nine-inning game 3 p.m. Friday at Brandt Park.

  • Wright on the money

    One remarkable fact about Seth Wright’s national championship season: it almost didn’t happen at all.

    Wright was out of wrestling when New Mexico Highlands University head coach Doug Moses persuaded him to give the sport another go (and make the move to NMHU).

    Wright agreed, and on Saturday, mere months after that decision, the 125-pound senior claimed the NCAA Division II national championship in his weight class.

    Adrian Jaramillo notched two pitching wins — both in relief — and popped a couple home runs to help Robertson go 3-0 and run away with the Socorro Invitational championship over the weekend.

  • RHS tennis team second in Roswell

    Loaded with young and untested players to start this season, the Robertson boys’ tennis team opened with a second-place finish in this past weekend’s Roswell tournament.

    Roswell’s Goddard High edged Robertson for the event title, although the teams split their head-to-head matchup.

    “We had kind of a newer team,” said coach Juan Carlos Fulgenzi, noting eighth-grader David Romero and freshmen Charlie Linder, Nick Newman and Lucas Vigil are on the varsity.

    Junior Emilio Gomez went 5-0 in the No. 1 singles flight.

  • Young Vatos dig into spring slate

    The NMHU Vatos have opened the spring rugby season with a modest but hopeful start for a very young team at 1-2.

    After narrowly losing on the road to improving Clovis-Cannon AFB 14-7 (a squad boasting many Air Force Academy graduates) and an experienced El Paso 14-8, a 28-0 win over the hapless University of Chihuahua, Mexico, seemed bittersweet last weekend in El Paso.

  • Cold won't stop them

    Three local athletes covering a spectrum of age groups continue to represent the Meadow City in a series of area distance running events.

    Tony Gallegos and Howard Dunbar braved cold temperatures, high winds, and a sandy course at the 10-mile portion of the Shamrock Shuffle held Sunday morning in Rio Rancho. Gallegos covered  the course in a time of 1:18:04, which was good for an overall 17th place and fifth in his age group. Dunbar finished in 1:35:58 to finish 53rd overall and third in his age group.
