  • Lady Dons Go deep

Losing a couple of key players with college-level skills last offseason should’ve meant at least a small step backward for the West Las Vegas softball program.

But the Lady Dons and their coaches had other ideas.

West won nearly two dozen regular-season games, went 11 of 12 in a sturdy district race, and earned a No. 5 seed in the Class 3A state tournament. Then the Lady Dons surpassed what they’d done the year before, reaching the state championship game after knocking off the No. 1 and No. 4 seeds.

  • Lady Dons win two state track...

Jayme Quintana brought an end to her high school athletic career in style Saturday, racing to a Class 3A state championship in the girls’ 800-meter run.

  • West reaches state softball final

Quick with the sticks and creative on the basepaths, the West Las Vegas softball team has scored three or four runs with one swing of the bat on a few occasions this season. So it’s no reach to say the Lady Dons were a play away from winning the Class 3A state championship this past weekend.

No. 2 Silver stalled a valiant rally from No. 5 WLV in Saturday’s championship game, then scored the last four unanswered runs to prevail 10-7.
