  • NMHU president, professor...

    Proving their prowess is not confined to the college campus, a New Mexico Highlands University contingent that included NMHU President Jim Fries achieved victory in the recent Mount Taylor Quadrathlon.

    The self-titled “NMHU Viejos” won the 60-69 age division of the quadrathlon, which took place for the 27th time last Saturday at Mount Taylor, near Grants.

  • Four locals shine in 'Locos...

    Four Las Vegas-area natives braved thick mud and brisk mid-winter weather to represent the Meadow City in this past weekend’s Corrida de los Locos.

    Corrida de los Locos, held at the Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe golf course, is a 5.8-mile race that has become an annual tradition.

    • Longtime Las Vegan Tony Gallegos, now a resident of Española, placed sixth overall with a time of 43 minutes and 52 seconds. Gallegos, 46, finished third in his age group. Gallegos retains strong ties to the Meadow City, which is home to much of his family members.

  • Cowboy streak hits seven

    The late-season surge continues for the New Mexico Highlands men’s basketball team, which recorded double-digit wins over Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference West Division foes Fort Lewis and Adams State this past weekend.

    Coach Joe Harge’s Cowboys (16-7, 10-5) have won seven straight games and play their final regular-season home game Tuesday night against Colorado State-Pueblo.

  • St. Mike's ends RHS run

    SANTA FE — The only wrestling team in the district to field grapplers in all 14 weight classes, St. Michael’s advanced most of them to the championship round Saturday.

    In the process, the Horsemen snapped Robertson’s 12-year monopoly on the District 1A-3A title, taking the banner on its home floor at Perez-Shelley Gymnasium.

    Mora’s Rangers are riding the momentum of three key recent victories, two of them nailbiters.

    Mora 69, Mesa Vista 68

    Mora visited Ojo Caliente Jan. 30 to face the Mesa Vista Trojans in a non-district rematch. The teams had met in the first round of the NRG Tournament earlier in the season, and the seven-point loss had left a bitter taste with coach Hank Laumbach and the Rangers.

    “It was as if we didn’t get off the bus that day,” Laumbach said. “We knew driving away that we let one slip away.”

  • NMHU wrestler vaults to No. 1

    After knocking off two different wrestlers ranked No. 1 in the nation this season, Seth Wright is finally getting his turn at the top.

    Wright, New Mexico Highlands University’s 125-pounder, this past week ascended to the No. 1 ranking within his weight class in NCAA Division II, NMHU’s sports information office reported.

    Wright is a two-time RMAC Wrestler of the Week this season.

  • District hoops races gain clarity

    Pojoaque Valley took a step closer to another district title in girls’ basketball over the weekend, and the Santa Fe Indian School boys show no signs of slowing in their pursuit of a championship.

    Meanwhile, for the Meadow City’s prep hoopsters, it’s been a mixed bag of fortunes the past few days.

  • Graham in for NCAA meet

    Ranked third nationally in the triple jump and fifth in the pentathlon, New Mexico Highlands’ Angella Graham could be the school’s strongest contender for an NCAA Division II national championship.

    Graham qualified for this spring’s national indoor meet with performances at separate University of New Mexico-hosted meets this past month.

  • Raton routs Dons

    West Las Vegas’ boys’ basketball team stepped into the cellar of District 2-3A on Wednesday, and former cellar-dweller Raton escaped at the Dons’ expense.

    The host Tigers surged late in the first half to blow open a close game, and they’d end up winning 65-48.

    With identical 1-6 district records and a split of the regular-season series, WLV and Raton are technically tied for fifth place. But because the Tigers won by 19 compared to  West’s 47-41 victory back on Jan. 23, they own the tiebreaker.

  • Horsemen nip Cards in rematch

    Robertson and host St. Michael’s again treated fans to a close, entertaining boys’ basketball game, but the Horsemen evened the season series with a 47-42 win Wednesday night at Perez-Shelley Gymnasium.

    The loss dropped the Cardinals to 15-6 and 3-4, good for fourth in the District 2-3A chase with three games left for each district team. St. Mike’s is 14-9, 5-2, sandwiched between Santa Fe Indian (7-0) and Pojoaque (4-3) in the standings.
