  • Crespin prevails in six

Cruising to a bruising victory in what was described as a lopsided rematch, Las Vegas middleweight Arturo “El Toro” Crespin stopped Charles Alderete in the sixth round Friday night.

The technical knockout, called when Alderete’s corner threw in the towel at the 1:19 mark in the final round, came on the undercard of Johnny Tapia Presents “The Next Chapter, Part Four,” a pro boxing event held at the Crowne Plaza in Albuquerque.

  • Smoke and Fuego

Fourteen runs was almost enough to sustain the Las Vegas Train Robbers on Saturday night at the Santa Fe Fuego.

    Almost.

After a six-run outburst in the top of the frame, Vegas led 14-12 midway through the sixth. But the Fuego, matching the Robbers’ prolific offense hit for hit, tied the score with two runs in the home half of the inning. And they got a single run — the eventual game-winner — in the bottom of the eighth.

Santa Fe outhit Las Vegas 19-16 in the Pecos League neighbors’ first meeting.

  • NMHU athletes make all-region

NMHU Sports Information and Optic reports

Several New Mexico Highlands University athletes have earned recognition on all-region teams for their performances in the recently concluded spring sports seasons.

NMHU baseball outfielder Jordan Goliat was recently selected to the 2013 Daktronics Baseball All-South Central Region First Team.  The junior from Phoenix was one of the Cowboys’ best players in 2013 and received recognition from the NCAA Division II Sports Information Directors of the South Central Region.

  • RedHawks’ clutch hitting sinks...

Down to its last chance, Oklahoma City rallied to beat Albuquerque 13-10 on Saturday night at Isotopes Park.

Albuquerque led 9-7 after six frames and with both sides going scoreless in the seventh and eighth, the Isotopes needed just three outs to put the win away.

But the ‘Topes got just one out before Oklahoma City’s Che-Hsuan Lin blasted a two-run homer off reliever Steve Ames.

  • Lobos eliminated

    The Associated Press

FULLERTON, Calif. — Nick Crucet hit a go-ahead RBI single in the 13th inning and Columbia held on to earn its first NCAA tournament win with a 6-5 victory over New Mexico on Saturday night in the Fullerton regional.

The Lions (28-20) scored five runs in the eighth inning to erase a 5-0 deficit, getting the last three runs with two outs. Columbia was to play the loser of the Arizona State-Cal State Fullerton matchup.

  • First time for everything

The Las Vegas Train Robbers stayed on the tracks of a recent winning streak Tuesday night, chugging past the .500 mark for the first time as they made their home debut.

An estimated crowd of 200 was on hand to see the Robbers down the visiting Taos Blizzard 18-6 at Rodriguez Park. Las Vegas improved to 7-6, second place in the division behind Trinidad.

“We’re an incredible offensive team,” said Las Vegas manager Casey Dill. “As well as we hit the ball, we have a chance to win every night.”
