  • Highlands athletes honored for...

It was a winning season on the pitch and in the classroom for New Mexico Highlands women’s soccer this past fall.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America on Nov. 21 announced NMHU as one of the national honorees of the 2012-2013 Team Academic Award on Nov. 21.

To qualify for the award, teams must have a 3.0 grade point average or higher, the Cowgirls earned a 3.26 GPA. This is the fourth straight year that the team has finished with above a 3.0 team GPA.

  • On to the final!

For the first time since 2007, the Robertson football team is in the state championship game.

The Cardinals overcame a 10-0 deficit, then held on for a 21-16 road win Saturday at Taos in the Class 3A state semifinals. They will host Silver, a 41-28 victor over Ruidoso on the other half of the bracket, this coming Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Stadium in Las Vegas.

Robertson’s three playoff victories have all come on the road against higher seeds, and in each case the Cardinals avenged a regular-season defeat.

  • Hoops: West teams off to...

West Las Vegas’ girls’ basketball will look to pump their record up to 3-0 — all at the expense of Santa Fe teams — on Tuesday when the Lady Dons play at Santa Fe Indian School.

The Lady Dons opened their schedule by routing Capital 75-28 this past Wednesday night at Gillie Lopez Gym.

The team followed that by pulling off a 51-47 overtime thriller Friday at St. Michael’s.

Notably, all three WLV girls’ teams won at Perez-Shelley Gymnasium in Santa Fe, the frosh 37-30, the junior varsity 44-42.

  • Stirring debut for Dons

D.J. Bustos scored nine of his game-high 20 points in the first quarter, setting the tone early in West Las Vegas’ 61-38 boys’ basketball win over visiting Santa Fe Indian.

It was the home opener for the Dons and new head coach David Bustos in his return to the home bench at Gillie Lopez Gym. Bustos previously led West deep into the state tournament.

Santa Fe Indian looked like a team just starting its season, committing a slew of turnovers both forced and unforced.

  • Nationals qualifiers
  • Cards-Tigers in semifinal

Only the Taos Tigers stand between Robertson and what would be a stunning return to the Class 3A state championship football game.

Taos (11-1) hosts Robertson (7-5) at 1 p.m. Saturday in the state semifinals. In the weekend’s other semifinal, Ruidoso hosts Silver on Friday night in a matchup of the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds.
