  • Aragon makes physique debut

    Las Vegas native Ryan Aragon recently competed in the 2012 Max Muscle Organization of Competitive Bodybuilders Natural Southwest Classic Bodybuilding and Figure Championships.

    Aragon placed fourth in the Teen category and fifth in the Junior category in his first foray into competitive bodybuilding. The contest was held July 28 in Albuquerque.

    Aragon is a member of the Class of 2010 at West Las Vegas High School. He is the son of Emory and Denice Aragon.

    LONDON — Michael Phelps got up to leave his last news conference at the Olympic pool when his relay mates were asked if they thought he would really stay retired.

    Before they could answer, Phelps smiled and said emphatically: “Yes, yes.”

    The most decorated Olympian called it a career on Saturday night with a fitting ending — a gold medal in the 4x100-meter medley relay at the London Games.

    LONDON  — It’s a collection of superstars with MVP trophies, scoring titles and all sorts of impressive statistics. And it wasn’t until the U.S. men’s basketball team was finally challenged that it found its leader.

    Lithuania was on the verge of an Olympic-sized upset when LeBron James made four big baskets in the final four minutes Saturday, finishing with 20 points in a 99-94 victory that kept the Americans unbeaten but cracked their aura of invincibility.

  • Duo All-American in javelin

    Before the recent Junior Olympics national track and field competition in Baltimore, Nicholas Gurule had never boarded an airplane.

    By the time he returned to the Meadow City from the big meet, Gurule was flying high in more ways than one.

    The 14-year-old West Las Vegas student earned a national runner-up finish in the javelin, youth division (13-14), defeating 45 other throwers and securing All-American honors.

    Oh, and he also got to ride in a plane for the first time.

  • Cougar town - In photo finish,...

    Tuesday’s city league championship game came down to the final at-bats for the Vida Encantada Cougars, who had to claw and scratch back from a rare deficit against a battle-hardened Budweiser-Dick’s-Night Owl club for a 9-8 win.

    With young Jacklyn Alarcon pitching some of her best softball of the summer, the Bud team held their offense-minded counterparts well below their previous tournament average of 22.5.

  • Fun run to benefit youth...

    Area runners can look forward to another opportunity to test themselves this coming weekend — and it’s all for a good cause.

    A 5-kilometer Fun Run benefitting the New Mexico Youth Foundation and Alliance is scheduled for 7 a.m. Saturday at the Gene Torres Golf Course.

    Runners ages 5 to 70-plus are welcome to take part. Those 12 and younger are free, while those older than 12 are asked to make a $25 donation that constitutes the race fee.
