  • Cowgirls, Mountain Lions battle...

    COLORADO SPRINGS — Kailey Hernandez hit a two-run double in the sixth inning to lift the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to a 7-5 victory over the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls and a doubleheader split Saturday afternoon at Mountain Lion Field.

    New Mexico Highlands (5-6) won the opener 13-4.

  • Lady Dons, Cardinals head to...

    Next stop: The Pit.

    West Las Vegas’ Lady Dons made their way to the Class 3A state basketball quarterfinals by doubling up Hatch Valley 60-30 on Friday before a mostly full Gillie Lopez Gym.

    The Lady Dons (25-4) will play Thoreau at 3 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner getting a semifinal date with either No. 1 Portales or No. 9 St. Michael’s on Thursday. Including Tuesday’s games, the remainder of the 3A girls’ tourney will be held at University Arena (AKA The Pit) in Albuquerque.

    Thoreau beat Hot Springs 58-47 in another Friday playoff game.

  • Cardinal sluggers third in Cobre

    Nicholas Aragon and Luke Aragon earned spots on the all-tournament team Saturday in the Cobre Invitational after helping lead the Robertson baseball team to a third-place finish in the season-opening event.

    The Cardinals, now under the tutelage of new head coach Shannon Aragon, nipped Kirtland Central 2-1 in the third-place game on Saturday.

  • BREAKING/ONLINE: Cowboys reach...

    With a 90-80 decision against Fort Lewis on Tuesday night, New Mexico Highlands' men's basketball team earned a trip to Pueblo, Colo., for the semifinals of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Shootout.

    The Cowboys (19-9) will face Colorado Christian (12-15), who upset the RMAC East's No. 1 team Colorado School of Mines on Tuesday. The Cowboys and Cougars tip off at 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Colorado State Fairgrounds.

    Friday in Las Vegas-area sports:

    New Mexico Highlands routed Colorado Christian 96-64 in the semifinals of the RMAC Shootout men's basketball tournament. Joe Harge's Cowboys advance to face Metro State at 5 p.m. Saturday in the championship game. The tourney is being held at the Colorado State Fair Events Center in Pueblo, Colo.

  • Cowboys reach RMAC semis

    New Mexico Highlands cleared the first hurdle in its quest for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference men’s basketball championship on Tuesday night, topping host Fort Lewis 90-80.

    The RMAC Shootout quarterfinal victory propels NMHU into Friday’s semifinals — vs. Colorado Christian at 5:30 p.m. — as the tournament shifts to the Colorado State Fair Events Center in Pueblo, Colo. Colorado State-Pueblo will play Metro State in the other semifinal. The title game will take place 5 p.m. Saturday.

  • State tourney lineups set

    Fans of local area high school basketball teams now know whom and where their favorite hoopsters will be playing in the opening round of the New Mexico state tournaments.

    Girls’ first-round games will take place Friday at the home campuses of the higher seeds. The boys will play Saturday.

    In Class 3A girls’ hoops, West Las Vegas received the No. 4 seed and will host No. 13 Hatch Valley at 7 p.m. Friday. The Lady Dons (24-4) and head coach Jose Medina are coming off a district tournament final win over host Santa Fe Indian.

  • NMHU takes aim at Shootout

    In their only previous meeting this season, Colorado Christian narrowly defeated New Mexico Highlands 65-61 on Jan. 8 in Lakewood, Colo.

    So coach Joe Harge and his Cowboys will be seeking payback Friday in the semifinals of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Shootout, the league’s postseason basketball championship tournament.

    The Cowboys (19-9 overall, 12-7 RMAC) and Cougars (12-15, 9-10) tip off at 5:30 p.m. at the Colorado State Fair Events Center in Pueblo, Colo.

  • Pecos slips past Mora in girls...

    Friday night Mora hosted the girls district basketball tournament in the Mora High School gym. This was the scene of an exciting game but after hard playing Mora Rangerettes lost to the Pecos Lady Panthers with the ending score being a close 50-47 in favor of Pecos.

     At the end of the first quarter they were tied 8-8. Mora fell behind in the second quarter with Pecos edging the Rangerettes 19-15.

    Mora rallied in the third quarter with 15 points to Pecos’ seven.
