  • BREAKING/ONLINE: Lady Dons state...

    Santa Fe Indian School has defeated West Las Vegas 56-50 in overtime for the Class 3A girls' state basketball championship; the title game, held Friday night at The Pit, was the second overtime contest in as many days for the Lady Dons and coach Jose Medina, and it was a rematch of the District 2-3A tournament final won by WLV. 

    The state runner-up finish is the highest ever for a West Las Vegas girls' basketball program that has fielded some strong teams over the years.

  • West heads to championship

    West Las Vegas is headed to the state championship game in Class 3A girls’ basketball after surviving an overtime thriller against district rival St. Michael’s early Thursday in The Pit.

    Miranda Martinez hit a buzzer-beating basket to lift the Lady Dons (28-5) to a 47-46 triumph over the Lady Horsemen. The Lady Dons and coach Jose Medina now prepare for tonight’s title tilt against the winner of Thursday’s other semifinal between Santa Fe Indian School and Lovington. Tipoff of the championship game is 6 p.m. today, also at The Pit.

  • Purple Pride!

    National championship qualifiers in three sports got a rousing sendoff in a pep rally this week at New Mexico Highlands University’s Wilson Complex.

    The NMHU men’s basketball team (20-10) will play Augustana (S.D.) on Saturday in Mankato, Minn., site of the NCAA Division II Central Regional. Winner of the eight-team regional moves on to the Elite Eight.

    Two-time All-American Angella Graham from the Cowgirl track team will compete in the D-II Indoor Nationals beginning Friday at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

  • Locals All-RMAC

    A former Robertson High standout and a onetime West Las Vegas star have been honored with selections to the All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference women’s basketball team for the 2009-10 season.

    Robertson alumnus Jessica Armijo, who led New Mexico Highlands to a 10-15 record — a seven-game improvement from a year ago — was selected to the second team All-RMAC West Division. Armijo averaged 11 points, four rebounds and nearly two assists a game.

  • Cards' memorable ride ends

    Turnovers and inaccurate shooting doomed Robertson in a 70-51 defeat to Santa Fe Indian in the Class 3A boys’ quarterfinals Wednesday night at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.

    Robertson, which improved from a district also-ran to a 19-10 contender in David Bustos’ second season, figures to have much of its young team back next season.

    But on Wednesday, perhaps youthful inexperience hurt the Cardinals — which lost two key guards over the course of the campaign.

  • Outlaws in Year 3

    The Las Vegas Outlaws — a collection of local gridiron talent competing as part of the New Mexico Premier Football League — opened its third season this past Sunday, falling 6-0 to the New Mexico Wolfpack in a rugged defensive battle at Perkins Stadium.

    Doug McDaniel hit Andrew Shock for a 16-yard touchdown pass with 4:34 left, providing the only points of the blustery afternoon. The Outlaws threatened early but fumbled the ball away just a few yards from paydirt.

  • Cowgirl softball wins UCCS series

    Before this past weekend, it had been a while since the New Mexico Highlands softball team won a four-game series with Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rivals.

    But with 7-1 and 7-5 wins in day two of a two-day, four-game set at Colorado-Colorado Springs, the Cowgirls and coach Shellie Broyles put an end to that drought.

    NMHU, now 7-6 overall and 3-1 in the RMAC, continues league play at home this weekend, hosting Colorado School of Mines on Saturday and Sunday.

  • Cowboys to face Vikings

    For the first time in school history, New Mexico Highlands University’s men’s basketball team will play in the NCAA Division II tournament this coming weekend.

    Highlands (20-10) was awarded the No. 6 seed in the Central Region and will play No. 3 seed Augustana College, S.D., in the opening round Saturday on the campus of Minnesota State-Mankato.

    ALAMOSA, Colo. — School history was made Sunday evening as the Adams State College women's basketball team — led by former West Las Vegas standout Vera Jo Bustos — was selected to participate in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time.
