West Las Vegas is headed to the state championship game in Class 3A girls' basketball after surviving an overtime thriller against district rival St. Michael's early Thursday in The Pit.

Miranda Martinez hit a buzzer-beating basket to lift the Lady Dons (28-5) to a 47-46 triumph over the Lady Horsemen. The Lady Dons and coach Jose Medina now prepare for tonight's title tilt against the winner of Thursday's other semifinal between Santa Fe Indian School and Lovington. Tipoff of the championship game is 6 p.m. today, also at The Pit.

Kyle Gutchewsky homered and his New Mexico Highlands teammates David Bustillos, Oscar Sigala and Troy DeAngelis each collected two hits in Friday’s 8-3 win over Mesa State College.

But the man on the mound — Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference preseason Pitcher of the year Drew Vassil — really shined, going the distance in a nine-inning win, striking out five and allowing seven hits and no earned runs.

A six-run fourth inning by NMHU erased the Mavericks’ 3-0 lead, and the Cowboys tacked on an insurance run in each of the next two frames.

West Las Vegas’ Lady Dons made their way to the Class 3A state basketball quarterfinals by doubling up Hatch Valley 60-30 on Friday before a mostly full Gillie Lopez Gym.

The Lady Dons (25-4) will play Thoreau at 3 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner getting a semifinal date with either No. 1 Portales or No. 9 St. Michael’s on Thursday. Including Tuesday’s games, the remainder of the 3A girls’ tourney will be held at University Arena (AKA The Pit) in Albuquerque.

Thoreau beat Hot Springs 58-47 in another Friday playoff game.

Nicholas Aragon and Luke Aragon earned spots on the all-tournament team Saturday in the Cobre Invitational after helping lead the Robertson baseball team to a third-place finish in the season-opening event.

The Cardinals, now under the tutelage of new head coach Shannon Aragon, nipped Kirtland Central 2-1 in the third-place game on Saturday.
