  • Bustos leads all-state selections

Justin Bustos’ remarkable senior season received a crowning honor this past month with the announcement of his selection to the Class 3A boys’ basketball all-state team.

Bustos led Robertson in scoring and was among the state and team leaders in several statistical categories, helping the Cardinals reach the state semifinals in March.

  • Cowgirls recover, earn split...

A pair of bounce-back efforts on Sunday secured a doubleheader sweep and a four-game series split for New Mexico Highlands softball in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play against visiting Colorado-Colorado Springs.

The Cowgirls, who’d lost both ends of a Saturday twinbill with the Mountain Lions, trailed by three runs in Sunday’s opener but put together four runs in each of the third and fourth innings to prevail 8-4.

  • ‘Cats claim crown

    The Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS — Before his confetti-flecked suit gets back from the cleaners, John Calipari will be on the road.

Such is life for a coach who recruits all that NBA-ready talent — especially when those players get in the habit of bringing championships back to their ol' Kentucky home.

  • Luna softball finds success on...

    By Jesse Gallegos
    Luna Community College

It was a largely successful road trip for the Luna Community College Lady Rough Riders, who swept Clarendon 5-3 and 5-4 last Wednesday and took one of four games from North Platte Community College in games played Friday and Saturday.

They lost to North Platte 4-3, 10-1 and 8-5 and won 5-3.

The Lady Rough Riders are now 8-23 on the year.

  • Vatos rumble past Brujos

    Submitted to the Optic

  • Chavez has highlight day

Anytime you can stay close to — much less defeat — Pecos star Antonio Varela in a race, it’s a very good day.

Mora’s Alonzo Chavez pulled off that particular feat this past Saturday in the Fox-Vixen Relays hosted by Fort Sumner High School. Running in the boys’ 1,600-meter run, Chavez finished in 4:49, good enough to win the event and edging Varela — the two-time defending state champion in the event — by more than four seconds.

  • Highlands bounces back vs. Mesa

A meeting with their arch-rivals apparently was enough to stoke the Highlands Cowboys’ competitive fire — and burn away the memory of last weekend’s losses at CSU-Pueblo.

The Cowboys won two of their first three games against Colorado Mesa over the weekend in a triumphant return to Brandt Park. The visiting Mavericks came into the weekend series ranked 23rd in NCAA Division II baseball.
