    MINORS DIVISION

  • Robbers on win streak

    Corey Deighan limited the Trinidad Triggers to a single earned run and struck out five through seven solid innings Wednesday night, and the visiting Las Vegas Train Robbers picked up a 5-3 win.

    It was the Train Robbers’ second win in as many nights at Central Park in Trinidad, Colo. They’d won three straight — their longest win streak to date — including a 9-4 win Monday night at the division-leading Santa Fe Fuego (14-5).

    Las Vegas never trailed, although Trinidad tied it 1-1 after one complete inning.

  • Major moves in Mora hoops

    New coaches will man the sidelines this coming winter at Mora boys’ and girls’ basketball games following wholesale changes in the high school’s coaching staff.

    Marco Sanchez, a teacher with the Mora school district, has been hired to replace veteran coach James Branch at the helm of the Rangers’ boys’ basketball team.

    And Greg Laumbach is the heir apparent to longtime coach Mark Cassidy in overseeing the Rangerettes program. Laumbach learned of his selection within hours of winning election as Mora County sheriff on Tuesday.

    Fishing report, June 2
    This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

    Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was sporadic at best this past week. A few good size trout were caught by anglers using Power Bait.

  • Vatos reach national sevens...

    In one of the prouder moments in the 22-year history of the club, New Mexico HIghlands University’s Vatos finished as national runner-up over the weekend at the National Small College Rugby Sevens Championship held in Philadelphia.

    The Vatos won their first four matches of the tournament to earn a spot in the championship, falling 22-14 to New England College, the second-ranked team in the nation. Just a couple of possessions separated the relative newcomer to the national sevens scene from the program’s first national title.

  • North-South weekend ahead

    Some of the premier Las Vegas-area athletes from the Class of 2014 will be representing their schools in the new-look North-South All-Star Games this coming weekend.
