TUCSON, Ariz. — The NCAA Division II lead in the heptathlon was no surprise, but who knew senior Salcia Slack would make history on so many levels Thursday and Friday at the 2015 Jim Click Combined Events at the University of Arizona in Tucson?

  • Passing the tests - RHS tennis...

Warren Fulgenzi Jr. was all business Wednesday afternoon, returning serve without much wasted motion — or emotion.

Upon closing out a set, he allowed himself a fist pump, then went back to work.

Since transferring — along with sister Brandee and father Warren — from Santa Fe High to Robertson in the offseason, the junior tennis standout has quietly led the Cardinals on a promising run.

  • Topes have new look

ALBUQUERQUE — New Isotopes reliever Ken Roberts admits he didn’t know a whole lot about his new hometown before arriving last week.

“All I know is that ‘Breaking Bad’ was here,” Roberts  told the Optic on Monday, the team’s Media Day, at Isotopes Park. “I’m definitely going to check out the Walter White house. When we got into town, the first stop was either there or the stadium, and I figured we’d better get to the stadium first.”

  • Just like old times for Cards,...

A few years back, the Robertson-Raton baseball rivalry packed postseason electricity into just about every regular-season game between the two. And for good reason, as these longtime 2-3A mates often battled it out for district titles and jockeyed for state seeding in that time period.

It’s not the same anymore, with Raton out of the district and in an entirely different classification. But Tuesday’s clash at Whorton Field was a throwback to those times when both Cardinals and Tigers were near the front of the pack on the Class 3A diamond.
