  • Taking it home

Staying patient on offense, manufacturing runs with a steady hand and — most of all — clamping down on defense, the Athletics concluded a strong campaign Saturday with a 7-2 victory over the Yankees in the La Plaza majors title game.

The final pitted the division’s top two squads against one another for a third time this season. (They’d split their two regular-season games, each winning by two runs.)

The Yankees had the sticks going early and took a 2-1 lead after Robert Gallegos’ score in the top of the second.

  • A's get last laugh in...

With just two teams in La Plaza’s softball division, there wasn’t much mystery as to who would meet in the final on Saturday morning.

But given the competitiveness of both the A’s and Marlins — not to mention the one-run difference between them in their most recent meeting — there wasn’t a clear favorite going into the championship game.

  • Photo finish for Cubs

Omar Gallardo’s dusty slide into home plate triggered a swarm of blue and red onto the field Saturday.

Gallardo’s was the winning run in the Cubs’ 6-5 walk-off triumph over the Marlins in La Plaza’s minors division championship game.

It was fitting that Gallardo put an end to the game. He finished 4 for 4 at the plate with three runs scored.

Solid in the middle of their order, the Marlins got three hits apiece from the one-town punch of Jared and Jaden.

But it was the Cubbies who came up with a trump card in the final at-bat.

  • LV wrestlers excel in AAU tourney

Not content with a T-shirt, a postcard or a keychain, Rico Montoya had a different souvenir in mind from his summer trip to Montana.

So Montoya picked up a couple of national championship medals and one runner-up prize to hang on his wall.

Montoya was one of four Las Vegas wrestlers who competed in the AAU Grand Nationals for Greco-Roman, freestyle, and folkstyle wrestling June 11-12 in Butte, Mont.

The foursome was part of a 15-wrestler contingent from New Mexico, said Marcos Martinez, one of the group’s coaches and an accomplished grappler himself.

  • Locals deliver in North victory

As far as Dean Gallegos is concerned, one of the defining moments of the North-South baseball weekend came away from the field.

One of the invitees to compete in the just-for-fun skills challenge on the eve of the series, West Las Vegas’ Michael Armijo volunteered to give that spot up in order to focus on the actual series.
