  • Grant: Four-time All-American

    NEW ORLEANS — New Mexico HIghlands University’s Jillisa Grant was among the top honorees who earned All-America distinction as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association this week.

    Grant earned four All-American honors at the NCAA Division II outdoor championships May 26-28 in Turlock, Calif.

    With the hirings of Ernie Rodriguez and Billy Page to take over West Las Vegas boys’ basketball and Robertson girls’ basketball, respectively, the two local school districts went on similar tracks — opting for out-of-towners who bring years of head coaching experience to the Meadow City.

    Rodriguez, who sat out of coaching last year, most recently was the head coach of boys’ basketball and football at Santa Fe Indian School. He takes over for Morgan Montaño, who was not rehired after three years in charge of the Dons.

    Summer vacation season is officially upon us, and what better way to celebrate than a day of free fishing at any of New Mexico’s public waters?

    Saturday, June 4, is Free Fishing Day in New Mexico, a special day when the State Game Commission grants anglers of all ages, residents and nonresidents, a day of free fishing in public waters statewide. No license, stamps or special permits are needed, although bag limits and all other fishing rules apply.
