  • ‘Lady Liberty&...

Carmel Pacheco-Aragon didn’t have to look far for inspiration when she decided to try for the Fiesta Memorial Run’s new prize for outlandish racing attire.

Perhaps caught up in the patriotism of the Independence Day holiday, she crafted a costume based on the Statue of Liberty. She donned a head ornament, wrapped herself in a robe and completed the outfit with a torch replicating the one held aloft by Lady Liberty.

  • RHS girls’ soccer...

Local girls’ soccer players age 5 to 11 are invited to take part in an upcoming camp hosted by Robertson High  girls’ coach Ray Parks.

The camp runs next week at the RHS field. Daily camp hours Monday through Thursday are 8 a.m. to noon.

On-site registration will be available the first day of camp; for advance registration or other information, parents may call Parks at (505) 795-9256. The cost per camper is a $20 fee.

Parks has guided the RHS Lady Cardinals to consecutive district championships and state tournament appearances.

  • Vaulting regional event in town

Part sport, part art form, part stuntman work. That is a way to describe equestrian vaulting, which will be showcased this weekend at Santa Fe Trail Event Center.

A regional vaulting competition, in Las Vegas for the first time, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and from 9 to 1 on Sunday.

  • Big turnout for Fiesta Run

A record 421 participants — ranging from 1-year-old toddler Micah Padilla in the children’s event to octogenarian Donilia Nieto in the 5-kilometer walk — made this year’s Fiesta Memorial Run a runaway success.

Sean Stan, 19, nipped Patrick Ortiz, 21, for the 10-kilometer run overall title on Sunday morning; three seconds separated the two at the front of the pack, which traversed from Montezuma to the heart of Old Town.

  • Local fans can see top athletes...

  • Minors Sox clinch title in LVLL...

The streak. The championship. The glory of being the last team standing in Las Vegas Little League as the Fourth of July weekend 2010 got under way.

The LVLL minors division Red Sox claimed all of that on Friday evening at Keyes Park by beating the rival Cardinals 13-3 in the last Little League game to be played in town this summer.

Attention now turns to the district all-star tournaments, which begin Saturday in Raton. Local all-star teams have been practicing the last couple weeks around the city.
