    Gov. Susana Martinez used part of her final address to the full legislature to say the new Democratic Senate whip had “demeaned” K-12 students by saying the students don’t have academic skills. Sen. Howie Morales criticized the Republican governor for apparently changing her stance on a voter-approved bail reform measure, and talked of a state that he described as better off once Martinez leaves office.
    Come on, guys. Enough about the failed policies of others. Get to the specifics of the solutions.

    We applaud the local watering holes that offered Holly Holm’s Saturday recent UFC fight card for a cover charge that seemed to hover around $15 — far below the standard pay-per-view asking price.

    We thank all the out-of-town visitors who made a trip to Las Vegas for the 64th annual Stu Clark boys basketball tournament.
    We especially salute the Bernalillo Spartans and the 14-0 record they left with after sweeping St. Pius, West Las Vegas and Robertson in order.
    We thank the parents and other fans who came to Highlands University’s Wilson Complex to see one of the oldest holiday hoops tournaments in the state.

    Democrat Paula Garcia, is running to represent District 40 in the New Mexico House of Representatives. Nick Salazar, who has represented District 40 for years, but has announced his retirement. This is an open seat likely to have several candidates competing in the primary. None will have a record to match Garcia’s.

The whole Southwest is dry: Thursday was Albuquerque’s 84th consecutive day without precipitation; for Roswell, it was the 70th; for Las Vegas, Nevada, it was day 105.

  • No taxpayer funds to settle harrasssment suits
    The following editorial was recently published in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

    Something is truly amiss in American democracy if elected officials and political appointees think they have the right to dispense taxpayer dollars as hush-money payments to sexual harassment victims. Not only is this an egregious abuse of public money but it also helps abusers think they can avoid getting caught.
