    As Alvin Korte recently travelled his native land, he became aware of and puzzled by the public display of an image that was deeply imprinted on his mind as a youth — the swastika.

    With Korte’s special interest in images and their meanings, more questions were raised. Why were swastikas — which today are synonymous with the Nazis and with death and hate — displayed on the high corners of the El Porvenir Hotel in Gallinas Canyon?

    Friends of Contemporary Art, a support group of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation, announced its biennial juried exhibition, Art on the Edge, to be hosted by the New Mexico Museum of Art in 2013.
    Artists based in New Mexico or surrounding states — Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, and Arizona — are invited to submit work online for consideration. The deadline for submission is 11:59 p.m. on April 30, Mountain Time. Information and a prospectus may be downloaded from www.nmartmuseum.org/artontheedge.

    There is a new education director at the City of Las Vegas Museum. Kristin Hsueh (pronounced “shoe”) started in October and hit the ground running.

    She has already made contact with New Mexico Highlands University staff and faculty, the United World College staff and several other community groups and individuals in preparation for bi-monthly educational programs throughout 2012.

    As Hsueh emphasizes, these programs are to be cooperative education events working very closely with the Las Vegas Community at-large.

    Sustainable Las Vegas wants to give residents ideas about how to save money and conserve natural resources by improving their homes.
    SLV’s fourth annual Sustainable Homes Tour features local homes that provide examples of how electrical and heating bills can be reduced or eliminated by using the energy of the sun as well as various conservation measures.
    The SLV’s homes tour is from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14 at the Las Vegas Arts Council building, 140 Bridge St.

    Roasting has the power to transform just about any food, but this effortless cooking technique is most dramatic when applied to winter vegetables.

    This is one reason that I'm the person at the table who immediately looks at the side dishes (not dessert!) when I am handed a restaurant menu. If they have roasted vegetables, I have to order them.

    WASHINGTON  — U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s children banished her from the kitchen decades ago — her tuna fish casserole the target of family jokes. Dinner duties instead fell to her husband, an accomplished tax lawyer who became a talented chef.

  • Americans generated 250 million tons of trash in 2010 (US EPA), which translates to 4.43 pounds per person per day.  If we isolate the holiday season, this daily average would be much higher, considering that Americans generate an additional five million tons of waste from Thanksgiving to New Years. Of that, four million tons come from shopping bags and wrapping paper.

    Start off your holiday season on a green foot by making a few small changes.

    On Sunday, Santa and his helpers will be at El Fidel Hotel Lobby to give gifts to children and listen to special requests they might have.

    Parents are invited to bring their children from 9 to 10:30 a.m. to this free event hosted by the Las Vegas /San Miguel Chamber of Commerce.  

    He previously greeted the children of Las Vegas during the Electric Light Parade earlier this month, but due to the bitter cold temperatures, many families were unable to attend the “gift giving” event in the Old Town Gazebo.

    The Miss Las Vegas/Miss San Miguel County Pageant will hit the stage once again at 3 p.m. this Saturday at the West Las Vegas High School Cafeteria.

    The pageant is a preliminary of the Miss America Pageant. The theme for the pageant is Jingle Bell Rock.  The phases of competition are interview, talent, swimsuit, evening wear and on-stage question.

    Four  young women will be competing for scholarships and a chance to represent our area at the Miss New Mexico Pageant next June.

    Debbie Pike hadn’t unpacked before she took a group of Cub Scouts on a hike, spent a day at Maxwell National Refuge, attended a lecture on grasses, and started work on the Junior Duck Stamp contest.

    And that’s all in less than a week. She’s had help: Debbie smiles gratefully at Lori Casados of the Refuge staff. “Lori is an awesome lady,” Pike said.

    FARMINGTON — When kids with cancer lace up the personalized shoes Madison Steiner hand paints for them, big smiles come to their brave faces, and for a moment they forget their battle against the illness.

    Since she launched Peach’s Neet Feet in July, Steiner, 21, has donated 55 shoes to children in 23 states through her grassroots cancer outreach. The colorful canvas shoes are emblazoned with the children’s names and what they love, from superheros to butterflies.

    There is a crazy delicious new trend in milkshakes. It involves adding a slice of pie to the blender along with the milk and ice cream.

    That’s right — a whole slice of pie.

    Which sounds simply too delicious for its own good. I wanted it, except that the winter holidays aren’t exactly milkshake season. So I started playing winter-friendly ways to borrow this idea of blending baked goods and sweet drinks.

    Hot chocolate was the natural choice. But pie just didn’t seem right.
