  • Monday, March 14, 1966 — There’s always a first time, and this was it. The Pecos High School Panthers, coached by Jake Martinez, paced a fiery final quarter to edge Springer 61-59 to win for the first time the New Mexico Class B basketball crown last Saturday at Johnson Gymnasium in Albuquerque. Providing the needed spark, substitute Jim Fleming replaced Paul Villas, who fouled out, to boost the Panthers to a 2-point final quarter with nine points and 13 rebounds off both boards.

  • Monday, March 14, 1966 — The Freeze ‘n Snack on Grand suffered its third break-in sometime between three and six Saturday morning. The establishment was robbed on March third, thus being hit by sneak thieves twice in less than a two-week period. Joe Valdez, owner of the place, told City Police officers Joseph Sedillo and E. Coca that the thieves had about wrecked the jukebox, had taken cigarettes and $15 in cash. Entrance had been gained by breaking a window in the toilet.

  • Wednesday, March 9, 1966 — When Joe Angel returns to Las Vegas next week to sit as Judge of the Fourth District Court, he will be coming home. Angel, 50, has practiced law in Albuquerque since 1957, but received his primary and secondary education in Las Vegas schools. He obtained his AB degree at Highlands University and his law degree, L.Ld., at the University of Denver. Gov. Jack M. Campbell recently appointed Angel to the judgeship after Judge Matias Zamora had submitted his resignation. Angel will be sworn in at Santa Fe on March 15.

    Highlands University

    Social work students from Highlands University pursued field practicum and employment opportunities with a record number of agencies on Wednesday.

    Nearly 100 social work students from the university’s main campus in Las Vegas and its Santa Fe Center talked with 57 representatives from 35 agencies at the 2016 Field Fair at Highlands.

  • Thursday, March 3, 1966 — Police Chief Arthur Esquibel, who has been head of the City of Las Vegas police department for the past four years, submitted his resignation to Mayor Frank Olmstead today, effective March 15. His letter said he would “seek employment elsewhere.” The resignation comes a day after the municipal elections.
