  • Wednesday, May 18, 1966 — Salomon Aguilar, owner of Sal’s Barber Shop, 153 Bridge St., won first place in the Stephen Barberama held in Denver last Sunday. Aguilar, who has been a barber 12 years, took first place against representatives of the 50 states. There were several barbers from New Mexico in the national contest, based on speed, accuracy and styling. Before opening his own shop, Aguilar worked for several years with Charlie Martinez at his shop on Grand Avenue.

    Highlands University

    A Highlands University bilingual education professor will bring international attention to New Mexico Hispanic literature at a conference in Madrid.

    Highlands School of Education professor Walter Archuleta is presenting on May 31 at the 10th International Conference on Chicano and Latino Studies at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid.

  • Tuesday, May 17, 1966 — Deputy Joe L. Romero is investigating a reported break-in reported yesterday by Ray Leger, superintendent of the West Las Vegas school system. The break-in was at Bernal school, where canned milk, food, and miscellaneous items amounting to an estimated $20 were taken.

  • Monday, May 16, 1966 — Steve Aragon and Ricky Wertz of Robertson High School won the State A tennis championship and runnerup in singles last Saturday in Albuquerque. During track and field competition, West Las Vegas High placed eighth with 11 points, while Robertson was 12th with four points. Aragon won the State A title for the first year in his high school career after being runnerup for two years at state. Ricky Wertz won his first major title by meeting Aragon in the finals at State.

    Highlands University

    A 2016 Highlands University graduate with a double major in criminal justice and psychology has her pick of nine top public and private law schools across the U.S.

    Jamie Allen earned a 4.0 at Highlands and will walk the stage at the Highlands commencement on Saturday to pick up her bachelor’s degree diploma. Her minor is in sociology.

  • Friday, May 13, 1966 — The school and convent at Our Lady of Sorrows parish, on New Mexico Avenue, were blessed and dedicated by the Rt. Rev. James Peter Davis, archbishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Santa Fe Thursday. Conrad Hilton, hotel man and philanthropist, gave $100,000 in an outright donation and another $100,000 spread over a 15-year period.
