  • Monday, March 28, 1966 — The State Mutual team, the new City League Champions, accepted the championship trophy from Chris Chavez, owner of Graham’s Pharmacy, who donated the trophy. Members of the team are Chris Trujillo, Ted Maestas, Leland Abreu, Ben Estrada, Pete Ortega, Leo Segura, Frank Herrera and Maggie Valdez. The team beat Quality Chevrolet 88-64 in the finals at West Las Vegas Gym.

    Learn about the life of Civil War soldiers in New Mexico, interact with living history participants, participate in kids’ activities such as hand-tinting a daguerreotype or working on a personal journal page, see black powder demonstrations, and hear speakers share their expertise on life during the Civil War in the West at the Pecos National Historical Park annual encampment.

    Starting at 1 p.m. today (Friday) volunteers are being sough to help clean up the battlefield. Volunteers are asked to meet at the visitor center.

  • Monday, March 28, 1966 — An elderly man, apparently confused by the new traffic lights installed at Grand and University, was injured near noon Saturday when he was struck by a slowly moving automobile as he attempted to cross the intersection. Jose Morales, 74, was taken to a local hospital after an incident where he was treated for a fractured left wrist and released.

    2 cups grapefruit and orange segments

    Cheesecake is usually served cold. So brace yourself for something a little different.

    The first time I made this recipe, I pulled it out of the oven and set it on the counter to cool. The plan was to chill it overnight in the refrigerator. But my dear daughter — also known as The Girl with the Sweet Tooth — just couldn’t wait to dig in. So I handed her a spoon. And when she started babbling with delight, I tried it, too.

Razing of the Little Theatre and the Radio Studio began Monday when construction crews began preliminary work on the addition to the Student Union Building at Highlands University. The addition, to be built on the site of the leveled buildings by the Cee Bee Construction Co. of Carlsbad, will cost approximately $250,000. The completion date for the addition has been set for Nov. 15.

  • Wednesday, March 23, 1966 — Janet Stover, 12, of Buena Vista won two trophies and a saddle, which she won as a participant in several American Junior Rodeo Association events. The saddle, which is engraved with “World Champion — Optional Rodeo AJRA 1965,” was awarded to Janet for her performance during the nationwide championship calf roping event for girls 12 and under, in Odessa, Texas., Janet, a student at Legion Park School, was chosen All-Around Cowgirl during her first show of the 1965 year.
