  • Wednesday, April 6, 1966 — A private development concern has contacted the Chamber of Commerce in regard to purchasing the north end area of the Camp Luna tract from the Chamber for rental housing purposes. Chamber officials said the property might be designated for renting to retirees but it is not to be restricted to such use. Preliminary construction plans indicate 10 one-bedroom units, 22 two-bedroom units and four three-bedroom units. A total of 36 residential units, for rental occupancy is planned.

    Hundreds of local residents are joining forces to fight lung cancer, united in the belief that surviving lung cancer should be the expectation, not the exception.

     These everyday superheroes will be meeting at the Albuquerque Free to Breathe Bike Ride and Yogathon on Sunday at the National Hispanic Cultural Center in Albuquerque. All proceeds from the event support Free to Breathe, a lung cancer research and advocacy organization dedicating to doubling lung cancer survival by 2022.  

  • Monday, April 4, 1966 — (Editorial) The crowd at McAllister Lake for the opening of fishing season there was estimated between 2,000 and 3,000 fishermen from all areas of the state and possibly elsewhere. It is a hope that everyone made a catch that will take outstretched arms to describe. It is also a hope that everyone had a pleasant break from his routine and will come back often for more fishing or other recreation at McAllister Lake or any of the other numerous fun facilities in the Las Vegas area.

  • Monday, March 28, 1966 — The State Mutual team, the new City League Champions, accepted the championship trophy from Chris Chavez, owner of Graham’s Pharmacy, who donated the trophy. Members of the team are Chris Trujillo, Ted Maestas, Leland Abreu, Ben Estrada, Pete Ortega, Leo Segura, Frank Herrera and Maggie Valdez. The team beat Quality Chevrolet 88-64 in the finals at West Las Vegas Gym.

    Learn about the life of Civil War soldiers in New Mexico, interact with living history participants, participate in kids’ activities such as hand-tinting a daguerreotype or working on a personal journal page, see black powder demonstrations, and hear speakers share their expertise on life during the Civil War in the West at the Pecos National Historical Park annual encampment.

    Starting at 1 p.m. today (Friday) volunteers are being sough to help clean up the battlefield. Volunteers are asked to meet at the visitor center.

  • Monday, March 28, 1966 — An elderly man, apparently confused by the new traffic lights installed at Grand and University, was injured near noon Saturday when he was struck by a slowly moving automobile as he attempted to cross the intersection. Jose Morales, 74, was taken to a local hospital after an incident where he was treated for a fractured left wrist and released.

    4 medium beets (preferably multiple colors)
    2 cups grapefruit and orange segments

    Cheesecake is usually served cold. So brace yourself for something a little different.

    The first time I made this recipe, I pulled it out of the oven and set it on the counter to cool. The plan was to chill it overnight in the refrigerator. But my dear daughter — also known as The Girl with the Sweet Tooth — just couldn’t wait to dig in. So I handed her a spoon. And when she started babbling with delight, I tried it, too.
