    CHICAGO — The parents of an 8-year-old boy who has had severe brain damage for years have sued a Chicago hospital, alleging that doctors pronounced their son dead, keeping him off his ventilator for hours, even though relatives continued to insist that the boy’s eyes and body were still moving.

    WASHINGTON — Freezing human eggs can be successful in treating infertility, but guidelines issued Friday still urge caution for women hoping to pause a ticking biological clock.
    Egg freezing had long been labeled experimental, but the American Society for Reproductive Medicine declared that’s no longer the case. The group cited studies that found younger women are about as likely to get pregnant if they used frozen-and-thawed eggs for their infertility treatment as if they used fresh ones.

    Fried is an award-winning investigative journalist and the author of five books, including the 2010 nonfiction Appetite for America: Fred Harvey and the Business of Civilizing the Wild West One Meal at a Time.

    Who would have thought a little girl from Las Vegas would get to live in Spain at a young age?  Ten years ago Cheryl Conway was crowned the first Little Miss Las Vegas at the age of 12, and today she is living and studying in Granada, Spain.  

    “It shows that through vision, hard work and persistence dreams can come true” said Philip Ortiz, executive director, of the Miss Las Vegas Scholarship Organization.

    Refuge will be a research ‘mecca’

    U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar lauded New Mexico Highlands University for its environmental research at the Wind River Ranch during the dedication of the property as the new Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge last Thursday.

    “This place will become a mecca for environmental education and research in New Mexico and the U.S. through Highlands University and other partnerships,” Salazar said. “Today we are taking a very significant step in creating the 21st century conservation agenda.”
