Pitchers key as Robbers...

With all the offensive fireworks the Las Vegas Train Robbers (and most of their opponents, for that matter) have been lighting up, pitching and defense have been largely overshadowed in this Pecos League season.

But the Robbers’ pitchers turned in solid, if understated, efforts in the past week as they won a key series with division rival Santa Fe.

• Ride to Pride’s Raising of the flag for Flag Day, 11 a.m. on Friday, June 14 at 47 Alameda Road. There will be refreshments, and it is open to the public. The Ride to Pride’s veteran program flag designed by Dereck Martinez of Rociada will raise along with the U.S. and New Mexico flag. Zoe Martinez, a fifth-grade student from Señora Valencia’s class at Don Cecilio Elementary took second in the flag design contest.

Montezuma Skating Pond meeting is Thursday

Community Meeting on the Future of the Montezuma Skating Pond, sponsored by the Skating Pond Task Force, will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. this Thursday at the United World College in Montezuma. The task force wants your opinion on what the Skating Pond should be used for. For more information, call Lea at 425-5514.
 

North-South festivities begin in...

Summer all-star season is under way this weekend with  the 2013 Class 1A-3A North All-Star games in baseball and softball.

Cobre High School will host both sets of festivities down south in Bayard.

West Las Vegas head softball coach Lucas Griego is coaching the North girls, which include five players from the Las Vegas area — WLV shortstop Gabrielle Griego, his daughter; Lady Dons pitcher Marissa Cordova and first baseman Amanda Garcia; Robertson infielder Ashley Jaramillo; and Mora catcher D.J. Chavez.
