Council run-off election set for...

Tuesday is City Council Runoff Election Day in the City of Las Vegas.

Las Vegas residents in City Council Ward 1 will pick from finalists David Ulibarri, the incumbent, and Oliver L’Esperance, while Ward 4 will choose a new councilor from David G. Romero and Carla Benavidez.

Voting takes place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the gymnasiums of both Robertson and West Las Vegas high schools. Voters from both wards can vote at either location.

Highlands track ranked 14th in...

Just two weeks into the outdoor track and field season, the New Mexico Highlands University women’s track and field squad is back knocking on a top-10 national ranking.

The Cowgirls entered the NCAA rankings at No. 14 after a solid meet at the Spank Blasing Open on March 31. In that meet, three NMHU women produce marks putting them among the top four nationally in their event.

The Cowgirls moved up 44 spots from last week and have now been ranked among the top 15 in the nation in each of the last six seasons.

College roundup: Erskine races...

Osheen Erskine’s victory in the 100-meter hurdles highlighted a good weekend for New Mexico Highlands University women’s track and field at the Don Kirby Tailwind Open on Saturday in Albuquerque.

Erskine won that event in 14.02 seconds. She finished just .05 of a second behind UTEP’s Annette Bolomboy in the 200.

Highlands also had top-three finishers in each of three throwing events.

SOFTBALL

Little Leagues' openers on...

Both local Little Leagues host opening ceremonies this weekend in town.

Las Vegas Little League opens at 9 Saturday morning at Keyes Park, with ceremony followed by a full slate of games.

La Plaza has moved its opneing ceremony to 1 p.m. Sunday, and games will be played at Rodriguez Park throughout the day.

Regular game schedules will run Monday through Friday starting next week.

SANTA FE —  The Santa Fe Community Foundation is now a small part owner of the Plaza Hotel and La Castañeda Hotel in Las Vegas after investing part of the dedicated funds from their Impact Investing Initiative.

The 24th annual New Mexico Highlands University Fiesta de la Hispanidad brings music and dance center stage back to Ilfeld Auditorium — on a different day of the week and time from when it’s been held in past years.

The fiesta, a collection of local cultural music, has typically been held on Friday or Saturday nights in March or April. This year’s event is set for Sunday at 2 p.m.

SANTA FE — A Democratic candidate for governor of New Mexico is seeking to disqualify a rival candidate from their party’s June primary election.

Gubernatorial candidate and former media executive Jeff Apodaca filed a lawsuit in state district court accusing state Sen. Joseph Cervantes of failing to submit enough petition signatures to run for the Democratic nomination for governor.

Cervantes spokesman Cody Aaron on Monday called the lawsuit frivolous and without merit.

Even though the renovations on West Las Vegas Middle School were set to be completed this week, that date may change.

During his report to the West Las Vegas School Board at its regular monthly meeting on April 12, Jerry Maestas, facilities manager told the Board that the contractors would be asking for additional days to finish the work 

Pearce: Don’t outsource valuable...

In a packed room filled with about 60 supporters at Republican Party headquarters on Bridge Street on Sunday afternoon, Congressman Steve Pearce highlighted issues that impact northeastern New Mexico and offered his remedies as part of his campaign for governor of New Mexico.

He pitched jobs for the youth, and adults and the need to address poverty.

The AAUW Annual Spring Used Book Sale will be held at Sala de Madrid on the Highlands University campus at Eighth and University. The sale is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Proceeds support scholarships for Highlands women and AAUW-sponsored educational programs.
