City ‘won’t run out of water’

With the snowpack water equivalent at about .2 inches, water flow in the Gallinas at about one-eighth of what it was last year and city reservoirs only being about 65 percent full, 2013 is shaping up to be another difficult year in terms of the city’s water situation.

But Las Vegas Utilities Direct Ken Garcia says the city has contingency plans in place to ensure that Las Vegas’ water supply doesn’t dry up.

“We’re not going to run out of water,” he told the City Council during an impromptu water presentation on Wednesday.

Kim Carpenter, a Highlands University alumnus and co-author of the New York Times best selling book The Vow,  urged the university’s graduates to go out and make the world a better place.

“There is an urgency to go out and make a difference...,” said Carpenter, the keynote speaker at the commencement ceremony at John A. Wilson Complex Saturday. “You are the future.”

West seeks to shore up...

West Las Vegas School district officials are hard at work preparing next year’s budget, and they say the outlook for next year is better than it has been for years.

“I am very happy to say that we haven’t seen a budget this good in quite a few years,” Superintendent Gene Parson said. “We almost feel certain to a point that we can be off emergency supplemental funding.”

So far, the district is expecting next year’s operating budget for next year to be $12.7 million.

Ex-Optic publisher launches...

Eleven New Mexico newspapers began sharing content this week as part of a newly created service named Community News Exchange, or CNEx, which is spearheaded by former Optic publisher Tom McDonald.

The Exchange  focuses on small-town community news in New Mexico, seeking to report on issues of interest to readers in the more rural areas of the state. Its intent is to supplement community newspapers with content that no other service provides.

New Mexico Highlands social work professor Andrew Israel has been  named a Fulbright Specialist by the United States Department of State.

Israel’s Fulbright service will be this summer at Ndejje University in Kamala, capital of the Republic of Uganda in East Africa. He will advise the university’s administration and social work faculty in further developing curriculum and ethical practices.

6 more sue archdiocese

ALBUQUERQUE — Six more men have filed lawsuits against the Archdiocese of Santa Fe and are accusing a late priest of sexual abusing them as teenagers in the 1970s and ‘80s.

The lawsuits recently filed in state District Court in Albuquerque brings the total to 10 men who accused the late Rev. Michael O’Brien of having sex with them when they served as his altar boys.

Lawyers said the men in these latest suits currently range in age from their late 30’s to mid-50’s.

Luna wins Piñon award

Luna Community College was one of five entities and the only institution of higher learning to receive a Piñon Performance Excellent Award at the 2013 Quality New Mexico Learning Summit and New Mexico Performance Excellence Awards Ceremony late last month in Albuquerque.

Quality New Mexico is a non-profit organization that engages in activities that seek to educate New Mexicans about quality and encourage and reward quality in business, education and other sectors.
