To his family, Michael Parson was a gentle giant, a man who loved to watch boxing on television and who was the oldest of 10 siblings, beating his twin brother for the honor by just three minutes.

“He was a big guy, but just very gentle, very kind to those that he spoke with,” his brother Gene Parson said.

But Michael Parson was also battling mental illness. At around noon on Wednesday the 56-year-old walked into the Big R store on Mills Avenue, asked to see a gun, loaded it with ammunition he had with him and fatally shot himself in the head.

A bystander spent a night in jail for failing to back off when told to by Las Vegas police at a crime scene where a suspect was being taken into custody following a shooting, according to court records.

Timothy Nixon, 49, was charged last week with obstructing police after he allegedly failed to obey repeated commands to leave a crime scene on the 2400 block of North Gonzales, where police were investigating a shooting, according to court records.

The governor’s office has released a list of eight names of those who have applied for the vacant San Miguel magistrate’s job including Las Vegas Police Chief Christian Montaño.

Montaño said he is nearing retirement after more than 20 years on the force and has been urged by many citizens to run for the job.

The following individuals were booked into the San Miguel County Detention Center between May 28 and June 4:

Alex Ulibarri, 43, 18-day commitment
Arturo Yara, 57, trafficking controlled substance
Evelyn Lucero, 61, harassment, criminal trespass, use of telephone to terrify
Chuck Roybal, 23,  Aggravated battery, violated probation
Nancy Jaramillo, 42, aggravated battery on household member, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, attempt to commit a violent felony
