HU Roundballers Ought To Be...

Losing a ball game can be for a number of reasons,  but when your squad HACKS a near-50 total fouls in one game against Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) best foul-shooting team, Univ. of Nebraska/Kearney Lopers (UNK), what do you expect? As late HU roundball coach Dr. John Donnelly would say to his athletes, "TURN ON YOUR BRAIN!  STOP HACKING!"

The Lopers converted 33 of 49 HU fouls (67.3%) for a 82-68 win last evening in Kearney.

Local Growth Depends on...

The Jan. 9-10 Optic quotes a researcher as saying that New Mexico will grow in the future, but that the growth (and jobs) will be concentrated in urban areas -- places "associated with rich intellectual infrastructure or that are otherwise culturally unique." Can Las Vegas capture a bit of that growth?

First HU Concert Choir Rehearsal...

The HU Concert Choir will begin rehearsals for the spring semester on Monday, January 23, at 7 p.m. in the NMHU Music Building, on the corner of Baca Ave. and 11th St. This spring's concert will be of a number of songs dealing with cities of the world, in a variety of styles. Students and area residents are welcome.

Santa Fe Water for Las Vegas?

The San Miguel County Office of Emergency Management and its Santa Fe County counterpart have asked the city of Santa Fe to become an emergency source of water for Las Vegas and San Miguel County, accoring to today's Santa Fe New Mexican newpaper.

The water would be trucked over Glorieta Pass in two 4,000-gallon tankers owned by San Miguel County.

Our wanter situation is the lead story in today's New Mexican, taking up half of the front page and most of an inside page.

Student Center Open?

The Optic reported last week that the first floor of the new student center at Highlands was to open on Monday in time for the end of spring break.  Well, the doors were unlocked, so one could walk in the front and out the back, but the only facilities open were the book store and the "facilities."  The bagel shop, convenience store, post office, box office, and cafeteria were not yet ready for prime time.  Still, the interior of the building is impressive.   

NM Support for Higher Ed Down...

According to the New York Times, the State Budget Crisis Task Force issued a report earlier this week which claims, among other things, that state support for higher education in New Mexico declined by 20 percent between 2006 and 2011.

The decline was part of a fiscal crisis facing states across the nation due to such forces as rising health care costs, underfunded pensions, deferred infrastructure needs, reduced revenues, and expected federal budget cuts.

Small Works at Gallery 140

Gallery 140, the exhibit space at the Las Vegas Arts Council, is now presenting a show called "Small Works," a group display of small-sized art by local artists.  The Gallery is at 140 Bridge Street.  "Small Works" will be on display xthrough Sunday, January 29. 

Gallinas Dry?

Although the USGS measurements of flow in the Gallinas at Montezuma hover at about 1.5 cubic feet per minute, there seem to be lots of dry stretches in the river through town and south of town.

Maybe 1.5 cubic feet per minute is just enough to fill up some of the puddles during the cool of the night, but evaporates to nothing during the day between puddles.

Scary.
