D.J. Bustos scored 34 points Saturday night, treating an appreciative home crowd to a slice of history. The West Las Vegas senior pushed his career total to 2,612, a New Mexico scoring record for boys' basketball.
The new figure surpasses the 2,591 points tallied by Alfred Romero of Wagon Mound as of 1977.
Bustos' milestone came as part of the Dons' 66-61 win over Taos, essential as West makes a run at the District 2-4A championship -- with up to three prescribed forfeit losses still to be determined in a Las Vegas courtroom.
