Drought worsens in New Mexico

Major stretches of river have already gone dry, farmers are leaving their land fallow, and cities are clamping down on water use, but things in New Mexico just went from bad to worse Thursday.

The latest map from federal forecasters shows exceptional drought has spread from a quarter of New Mexico to nearly 40 percent in just one week. At this time last year, less than one-tenth of the state was affected by what is considered the worst category of drought.

But in the case of Juan Andres Madrid, who died only recently, there is one more generation: He is survived by 16 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, 22 great-great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-great grandchildren. NMHU students create exhibit for museum

New Mexico Highlands University media arts students created a hands-on multimedia exhibit, The Science of Cities, for the Santa Fe Children’s Museum. A grand opening of the exhibit was held earlier this month.

The high-tech, high-touch exhibit is designed to engage children in fun interactive learning about how cities work, including a cultural focus on Santa Fe’s nine sister cities around the world.

Compacts in the works for schools

SANTA FE — Santa Fe’s public school system is moving to set new performance goals and transparency standards and for its four charter schools, a move that’s surprised some of the schools’ operators.
The planned compacts would be customized for each school and be used in the process of renewing charters for the schools in 2015.

Speaker to HU grads: Make a difference

Kim Carpenter, a Highlands University alumnus and co-author of the New York Times best selling book The Vow,  urged the university’s graduates to go out and make the world a better place.

“There is an urgency to go out and make a difference...,” said Carpenter, the keynote speaker at the commencement ceremony at John A. Wilson Complex Saturday. “You are the future.”
