THUMBS DOWN! DOWNED POWER LINES
Fire officials say a downed power line sparked the large Tres Lagunas Fire, which is burning about 10 miles north of Pecos. Windy conditions, low humidity and high temperatures have made it difficult for firefighters to battle the blaze, which started May 30 and has already consumed more than 9,000 acres. Let’s hope that this fire isn’t a sign of things to come for this area.

Grad’s project gets acclaim

New Mexico Highlands University media arts graduate Mariano Ulibarri put Las Vegas on the map in the makerspace movement when he established the fifth Hacker Scouts guild in the country, with cities like New York, Chicago, Boston and Los Angeles following suit.

Ulibarri’s cutting-edge Parachute Factory makerspace at 166 Bridge St. was featured recently in a story in Getting Smart, a Seattle-based technology and education website.

• Ride to Pride’s Raising of the flag for Flag Day, 11 a.m. on Friday, June 14 at 47 Alameda Road. There will be refreshments, and it is open to the public. The Ride to Pride’s veteran program flag designed by Dereck Martinez of Rociada will raise along with the U.S. and New Mexico flag. Zoe Martinez, a fifth-grade student from Señora Valencia’s class at Don Cecilio Elementary took second in the flag design contest.

Program puts inmates to work

SANTA FE —  Don’t be alarmed at the sight of orange jumpsuits outside the state Capitol. It’s just your tax dollars at work.
For roughly a month, a New Mexico agency has been paying “low-risk” inmates from the Penitentiary of New Mexico, south of Santa Fe, a dollar an hour to move furniture, paint, help with landscaping and do other tasks at state government buildings around the capital city.

City: Fireworks too dangerous

If you’re thinking about whether to buy fireworks to celebrate the Fourth of July holiday, Las Vegas Fire Chief Phillip Mares and the city’s governing body have a message for you: Please don’t.

North-South festivities begin in Bayard

Summer all-star season is under way this weekend with  the 2013 Class 1A-3A North All-Star games in baseball and softball.

Cobre High School will host both sets of festivities down south in Bayard.

West Las Vegas head softball coach Lucas Griego is coaching the North girls, which include five players from the Las Vegas area — WLV shortstop Gabrielle Griego, his daughter; Lady Dons pitcher Marissa Cordova and first baseman Amanda Garcia; Robertson infielder Ashley Jaramillo; and Mora catcher D.J. Chavez.

Dulcey Amargo - The big freeze!

Even as a child, I looked forward to the warm days of summer. I wasn’t a sedentary child by choice, but a bout with rheumatic fever at about age 6, left me a bit fragile and caused me to be homebound for better than half of my second grade year of school.
