Mayor’s travel tops $9,500

In the last 10 months Las Vegas Mayor Alfonso Ortiz has spent more than two months on the road logging about 4,000 miles while attending some 30 official functions at a cost of $9,500 to the city.

“And it was worth every penny of it,” says City Manager Tim Dodge of his boss’ travels.

A lobbyist would cost the city around $25,000 just for the legislative session and couldn’t possibly bring the level of expertise and devotion to the job that Ortiz does, Dodge says.

On the occasion of a birthday for one of us, my wife and I joined my sister Dorothy and her husband Joe Maestas for dinner at El Rialto. The rule in the Trujillo household is that the inviter pays for the invitee. And maybe that’s why we don’t invite others all that often.
But if we can inveigle one another to make the suggestion and turn it into an invitation, we’re willing. We’d almost finished our meal when the waitperson came by with the bill and took brother-in-law Joe’s credit card for processing.

Robertson High School’s graduation takes place at 10 a.m. today (Friday) at Michael Marr Gymnasium.  West Las Vegas High School’s graduation is at 10 a.m. Saturday at Gillie Lopez Gymnasium.

Cowgirls third in RMAC outdoor meet

GOLDEN, Colo. — Michelle Traynham’s stadium record javelin throw of 41.75 meters helped New Mexico Highlands to a third-place finish in the 2013 RMAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships this week.

Adams State (178 points) and Western State Colorado (156.5) were the only teams ahead of NMHU in the women’s standings.

Garcia wins top spot for research

New Mexico Highlands biology student Marcus García won first place for his research at the Western Alliance to Expand Student Opportunities annual conference in Tempe, Ariz.
García, a 24-year-old Las Vegas native, will graduate Saturday with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a minor in chemistry.

Ortiz breaks tie in favor of beer sales

It wasn’t a vote that Mayor Alfonso Ortiz seemed happy with casting, but in the end, after councilors deadlocked in a 2-2 vote, Ortiz broke the tie in favor of moving forward with alcohol sales during Train Robbers games at Rodriguez Park.

Sitting in the audience during the vote was Ray Collins, who lost five families members in a DWI crash in 2006. Earlier in the meeting, during the public comment portion, Collins spoke against allowing beer sales at the park.

Golden parachutes

The recent Associated Press story outlining the generous pensions that state lawmakers receive once they are out of office raises some serious questions.

Among the troubling issues raised by the article is that while lawmakers have trimmed pension benefits for some government workers they have resisted scaling back their own pension program.

Just how egregious is the situation?
